Hi, my name is Pam. My best friend showed me how to quilt and has created a monster. In a year's time, I now have a sewing/quilting room that is off-limits to everyone, shelves of fabric and thousands of templates. I eat and breathe this stuff. This is definitely the best hobby I have ever found. I love trying new ideas and reading about hints. I will try anything once.

I live in Texas with my husband of 20 years and my 200 pound neo mastiff. I have 2 grown kids and 3 grand-daughters (which are now starting to sew).

Would love to talk to others about trying new styles of quilting and giving info on old standbys.

kathy 03-08-2007 09:15 AM

welcome Pam, I'm also in Texas. You'll have a good time here and get lots of good tips and suggestions. We'd love to see some pictures of your work.

I'm in the process of getting some pictures together now, will post them when I have them done. I'm in north texas, I see you're from s texas. how's the weather there, it's 75 degrees here today.

mimisharon 03-08-2007 03:25 PM

Wow, two Texas gals! I am so glad to meet you Pam. Do both of you wear the cowgirl hats? I'm NOT laughing at you, I'm looking at mine sittin' atop my file cabinet. I love quilting too, please do share the pics. We're fans of sharing here.

Kathy, are you planning to come to the NC quilt show? You'll love sharing a room with us, right?

Sharon

kathy 03-09-2007 04:14 AM

Sharon, thanks for the invite but that's a tad far from my comfort zone. I haven't been 100 miles from my house in I just don't know how many years. And no I do not wear a cowboy hat ( I raise chickens not cows) don't need a hat but you sure gotta watch where you step. LOL

pam craig 03-09-2007 07:08 AM

well, actually we are horse people. my husband is a team roper. i only ride when he needs help gathering cattle, don't bounce from a fall as good as i used to. ha.

kathy 03-09-2007 07:38 AM

yeah, i quit bouncing a long time ago, probably couldn't get up there to bounce any more. I fell about 16 ft from a tree when i was 21, that's when i found out that i had no bounce. lol the fall wasn't bad but the landing nearly killed me! now i keep my feet firmly on the ground, if i fall it'll be out of my chair.

mimisharon 03-09-2007 07:49 AM

aww, Kathy, it's not that far to come here. hop, skip, and a jump. Maybe a lonnnnnnnnng jump, but you can do it if you're brave enough to climb trees!

Well, I have this thing about about sun with some of the meds I take, so hats are a thing of my daily life if I'm outside. sigh

[b]May a 3rd Texan join you? Actually, I'm an Okie but have resided in Texas longer than I did in Oklahoma. I've been quilting (off and on) since I was a young teen and would go to "club" with my mother. The neighborhood ladies would gather once a month at the home of one of the members. The day would be spent quilting for the hostess. A pot-luck dinner would be served.

My mother taught me basics of quilting, but she only knew a few basic patterns I learned more by reading quilting magazines. Then, there came PCs, and I not only have learned new techniques but have made new friends.

I live in south central Texas near San Antonio. Married to the same man for 52 years. We have 2 grown children, 5 grandchildren, and a cat. Neither of our children live nearby, but our son still lives in Texas.

SandraJennings 06-08-2007 09:32 PM

The sun had ris and the sun had set, there I was in Texas, yet on I traveled to the west where I now reside and like it best. Oregon, in the far north edge is where I hang my quilts from the hedge. Glad you joined us here. We have lots of fun.

Betty Ruth 06-09-2007 06:15 PM

Hi Sandra. I understand that Oregon is a great place for a person who likes green. It's also good if they do not get depressed from lack of sunshine. I have a good friend who now lives in Corvalis, Oregon. We worked together in San Antonio for several years before she moved to Oregon to be near her children and grandchildren. The remark about the lack of sunshine in the winter is from Dorothy. I can't verify it, as I've never been there. I'd like to go visit in the summer when it is dry and 102 degrees in Texas. Betty

Nina 06-21-2007 02:07 PM

Betty, I'm in San Antonio. Going to retire soon. Interested in possibly getting a quilting group together? Or does one already exist that I haven't uncovered?

Betty Ruth 06-21-2007 06:37 PM

Nina, I'm quite sure there must be many quilting groups in a city the size of San Antonio. In what part of the city are you? I don't actually live in San Antonio. I usually say that I live in San Antonio, because when I say that I live in Schertz, people look at me funny and say "Where?" Sometimes they even say "WHAT's that?"

I'm not personally aware of any quilting groups, but I can ask one of my neighbors, who belongs to a couple of sewing guilds. Besides that neighbor, I know of two more who live in close proximity to me who quilt. I know that the one directly across the street does not belong to a quilting group and doubt that she would be interested, although I can ask. Your best chance of finding a quilting group might be through my back door neighbor. I know that she has taken several classes, and her quilts, unlike mine, are both beautiful and perfect.

Nina, this afternoon, I was able to talk with my neighbor who belongs to a sewing guild. I told her about your inquiry. She said that there is a quilting guild somewhere in San Antonio, but she did not know how to contact them. She also told me about a local group that a friend of hers belond to for a sh ort time. Mary Anne said that they were a very exclusive group. New members have to audition to determine if their quilting skills measure up to the guild's requirement. Her friend got into the group, but the weekly meetings took more time than she had to spare. Mary Anne suggested that you should check the bulletin board at the Live Oak Civic Center quilt show next January or February.

I have not seen my back door neighbor to ask her about a quilting group.

Personally, I'm interested in all phases pf quilt making but doubt that my skills would be sufficient for membership. I'm 72 years old and have MS, which has affected my right hand. I do still make simple utility quilts that can be completed on the sewing machine. I have always loved quilts and would be interested in being a part of a nearby group that would accept my limitations. Since I am already committed to church and MS groups, the time I'd have for a quilting group would be limited.

Betty Ruth, You should come visit! A lot of people here seem to be upset about the rain, Me? If you want green you have to have wet. I find where I live....as I drive down into Portland there are wonderful waterfalls that come out in late fall to be frozen in place come winter. Beautiful as I see it. One of my fondest memories is of my uncles singing the Ricky Nelson song Listen to the Rhythm of the Falling Rain. Always loved the sound.

Betty Ruth 06-22-2007 06:13 PM

Sandra, we are getting a taste of wet right here in south central Texas. It has come down in buckets each day for a week. It was supposed to be dry over the weekend, but that forcast has now been changed. Some are complaining, but I'm not. We';ll have peaches this year. The farmers and ranchers will have hay for their livestock, and there should be no water rationing. Most of the cities get their water from an aquifer. Even the farmers irrigate their crops with water drawn from the aquifer. No rain means no water added to the aquifer while demand for water increases. I, too, love the sound of rain. What I don't like is flooding. We've experienced flooding twice in the nearly 45 years we've lived in this area. We moved to higher ground after the 2nd flood. No water has gotten into the house where we now live, but it has been close. One year, another inch would have put it in the house. Most years it is either feast or famine as far as water is considered.

Thanks for the invitation to visit your part of the country. I'd love to but doubt that I'll ever make it. We just got rid of our motor home because it hadn't been used in 3 years. It just sat in the driveway and depreciated.

The frozen waterfalls sound absolutely beautiful. Wish I could see them.

SandraJennings 06-22-2007 06:51 PM

Will try to catch a few shots this year for you. Will have to wait till late fall when the rains begin, but it will be worth it. They are truly amazing little treats. And as for the rush of rain ......I only shook the rain stick a little the other day...meant it for here.

Betty Ruth 06-23-2007 06:54 PM

Sandra, rain stick or rain rock, whatever........something actually kept the rain away for this one day. This was a big relief, as it was my turn to host the monthly meeting of the Stitchin' Bee. This is an informal gathering of ladies of the church who meet to sew, socialize, and eat. I sometimes think the last is most important. I know it is for the husband of one of the ladies. She has said that he asks her to have the ladies meet there so that he can sample all the goodies they bring.

I'll be looking forward tp seeing pictures of those frozen waterfalls. I'm sure they are just as pretty when not frozen.

Shertz is only about 5 miles from me. I'm in Windcrest - and most folks don't realize it is a city of its own surrounded by San Antonio. I'll keep you posted on any groups that I find. Thanks.

Betty Ruth 06-25-2007 02:46 PM

My friend, Virginia Lynch, lives in Wincrest. I'll be watching for news of any quilting group in the area.

Howdy Y'all...I am also from TEXAS and so glad to find other quilters in our same State....I live near Houston. Hope to keep in touch with you and share more quilting stories, tips, and helpful advice.

Betty Ruth 07-10-2007 05:43 PM

Welcome, Quiltinnana. Texas is a big state with lots of rural peo[ple as well as those in the big metropolitan areas. Are you a lonesome quilter, or do you have friends who quilt, also?

1quiltinnana 07-10-2007 08:27 PM

I am not a lonesome quilter...I have friends here that quilt and we share our books, tips, ideas, and we have made charity quilts together. I am not in a rural area.

Betty Ruth 07-11-2007 06:47 PM

Do you belong to a quilt guild, or is it just a loosely connected group of friends? It really does not matter. It is wonderful to have friends who quilt.

1quiltinnana 07-12-2007 12:48 PM

I did belong to a guild in Oklahoma but our trips have ended going up there....too far and one friend can't do it now due to health issues. We have a friend in Oklahoma who quilts , quilts, quilts and she belongs to this Guild is why we joined that one. My other friend here is joining her sister's Guild in Brazoria. They meet once a month. I may look into joining that one.. Thanks for the reply and Happy Quilting!! :D

sarah222 07-12-2007 01:37 PM

kathy, what part of TEXAS are you from.i'm all so from TEXAS

Betty Ruth 07-12-2007 06:17 PM

You said that you belonged to a Guild in Oklahoma. Does that make you an Okie, or were you just a short time resident there? I was born in Oklahoma and lived there my first 25 years. I've lived here in Texas MUCH longer than the time I spent in Oklahoma, though. Guess that makes me more of a Texan. My cousin, Corrine S., is one of that prolific Oklahoma quilters.

Howdy, I live in San antonio, where in texas are u? I have been quilting of and on for many yrs and have many ufo's a overflowing stash, love the color red cival war fabric, star patterns . How about u. Write back Bebe

Betty Ruth 12-02-2007 07:21 PM

Sorry to be so long answering your post. I was pretty sick for a while and didn't feel like getting on the computer.

In what part of San Antonio do you live? I live in Schertz but worked in San Antonio for 20 years before I retired in May 2000.

My stash of fabric is so large that at times it's hard for me to get to the sewing machine. I like different fabrics. My husband thinks I can make a quilt out of anything. When I'm headed for a garage sale, he usually tells me "No more fabric!!" I just can't resist a bargain, though. A couple of weeks ago, I bought 30 yards of fabric for $3.00 at a garage sale. That kind of a bargain is unusual, though. About 25 to 50 cents per yard is more common. I have also bought garments (usually cotton dresses with full skirts) and ripped them up for the fabric. I make small quilts and give them as gifts for new babies or give them to various charities. I've also made lap quilts for nursing home patients. The only bed size quilts I've made have been for our own use or for other family members.

Betty
