Once WallMart closed I had to travel half again as far to the nearest Joann's or Hancock fabric stores. I've heard that a quilt shop in Catalina is moving to Oro Valley or Tucson soon. They just had a huge sale to lighten the load of inventory they would have to move. I'm crossing my fingers that it is in Oro Valley. Marveen |
Hey Sharon it sounds like you live in my direction - I live off of Valencia by Casino Del Sol

Welcome, Sharon... Im from northern lower Michigan. We head to Phoenix area in the winter. We havent headed south to your area but are thinking of heading down this year. I have a friend from Mi that goes every year and is part of a guild or quilt shop group (not sure which) in Tucson. She enters quilts into a show they have in the winter. This year I plan to attend the show. I went to the one in Phoenix last year and really enjoyed it. They sure have a lot of quilt stores in that area... plus JoAnns, Lobby hobby and other. WAY more than what we have at home here.

Hi Deb,
I'm originally from Grand Rapids, both my kids went to Tech and I have some very fond memories of being in your part of the state. Which city do you live in? If you come to Phoenix then you are only 3 1/2 hours from Lake Havasu...depending on where in Phoenix you stay. If you are in Arizona the first part of November please come over to see our quilt show the first weekend of November. I'm on the committee and it is going to be fabulous. We have it every other year. I will definitely put a posting up to invite everyone. As I've said to others today, Lake Havasu has a terrific retreat the first part of January. I'll also post that info. Nice to talk to someone from home. Chris |
Well, you seem surrounded by an abundance of places to get your
fabric fixes! Here, on the other side of the mountains the pickin's are sllim. There is one quilt shop on Oracle and Orange Grove, but their prices are so high for fabric and notions that I get discouraged every time I stop by. Do you belong to the Tucson Quilter's Guild that Northern Deb mentioned? I'd love to join, but again, it's just too far away. I've been responding to feature stories in the AZ Daily Star that feature people who are struggling with health issues or who are refugees from war torn countries. Besides those outlets for my quilts, I try to make one a year for Tu Nidito, the Tucsonl organization that assists families with children who have chronic life threatening diseases or who are in the terminal phase of their disease. Quilts are really treasured there. |

It took me about 3 years of living in our current home before I joined the guild... I was a little nervous about it after hearing some horror stories. BUT, I shouldnt have worried... Everyone is so nice. I've learned alot from all of them. PLUS, we get together at the lqs for Friday morning chatter time with show and tell... I wouldnt miss that for the world. A cup of coffee, a snack and quilts. Who could ask for more

I can understand your passion and the Guild sounds very nice.
Perhaps when Northern Deb and the Snowbirds start coming back to Tucson the three of us could meet, have coffee and share any projects we are working on. If that sounds like a good idea, just drop me an email at: [email protected]. and we can swap phone numbers. |
Welcome from Northern California--hoping to retire in Tucson area in next year or two!!
|
Wonderful, Rose...
At this rate we may be able to form our own chapter of Quilted Paradise! I moved here from the Sonoma/Santa Rosa area a decade ago, and that is where I learned to quilt. Just let us know if you make any exploratory trips. We might be able to help with information, etc. Marveen |
Rose - When you get ready to move to Tucson, let me know if there is anything I can do to help. I've been here (this time) 4 years and absolutely love it. I was stationed here 83-86 and didn't find another place I liked better :)
|
Thanks! We come down about 2X a year to visit our son in Benson, AZ. Lots of great quilt shops in Tucson!!
|
Rose - have you been to Cowgirl Up quilt shop in Benson? It's small but the ladies there are absolutely wonderful. If not, drop in and visit next time you're in the area.
|
Was just there in December and I spent a bundle! I agree, the staff was wonderful!!! That shop has only been open for maybe a year now.

Hi and welcome to the Board Sharon. I'm a Snowbird, so maybe I'll see you next winter. A comple other Tucsonans that hang out here and I have already talked about getting together.
I had not read this whole thread before I posted, so I'm adding an edit. There are EVEN more Tucsonans than I knew about! It will be fun to meet you all when I get back to the desert. One of the many things, besides the desert, that I love about Tucson, is having 4 places to buy fabric etc within 10 minutes of my house! In CT, there's a JoAnn's 10 minutes away, but the closest LQS is 30 minutes - and that's when the roads aren't torn up having potholes fixed! |
I am starting to really look forward to winter (even though I love the heat here :)).
Keep me in mind when you're all here and visiting. I love coffee and chit-chatting :) |
It would be fun to get together! My favorite shops in Tucson are the Quilt Basket, Quilt Market and Cactus Quilt shop. There is one in Green Valley that is great too but can't remember the name right now.

hey, sometimes two cents is all you got left, but most welcome here.
