When I quilt on my small frames, I start in the middle, but when we have a big one in the wood frames, we start on both sides.

Hi and welcome to the board. I have never handquilted in a large frame only lap hoops. When quilting in a hoop you must baste and you must start in the middle and work your way out. But I LA in a frame with only about 28" of the quilt's length exposed to me and the entire width. Then I just start at the top and work my way down.
When a quilt is mounted on a frame you shouldn't need to start in the middle. I am assuming it is a frame where your top and backing are on rollers and then you have a take up roller for the finished parts. A large frame does not need basting as the frame and tension are holding the sandwich taut for you. Maybe a little more info on what type of frame you have will better enable us to offer advice. |
