I have all this scrap material and would love to make one but i cant for the life of me figure out what would look good and what wont. How do i fugure this out?

Welcome from Southeastern, PA!

Hi from burning hot NC

Welcome!
I think the most important thing to think of for planning a scrap quilt is contrast. Lots of patterns for scrap quilts specify "light" and "dark" fabrics. If you use any "medium" contrast fabrics, then you will need to consider more carefully where to place them. Some multicolor fabrics are difficult to deal because some parts are light and other parts are dark, so you also have to consider those carefully. One thing you may wish to purchase is a tool to help you see the contrast better. There are some red and green plastic transparent pieces that can help. |
Hello and welcome. Scrap quilting is an art where you must allow yourself to not plan.

Welcome from Ireland

Welcome from the CA desert. I love scrappys too. I have done them by seperating my scraps into three piles (dark, medium & light) and choosing alternatly from each pile for contrast and even distribution of color.

Welcome from Oklahoma!

Welcome from Missouri, take light ,medium and dark, scraps add a good background material and have fun. That is what scrapy quilts are all about. If you can not pick a pattern use several and put them togeather.

Welcome from Texas!

Welcome from Centennial, Colorado. Whatever looks good to you will be the best advice. I would try a 9 patch or a disappearing 9 patch for your first quilt. Use the search engine and you will find a great deal of help. If you have questions, just ask.

Thanks everyone, all the input is great!

Hi Sunday! Welcome from North Carolina!

Hello and Welcome to the board :D:D:D
So happy that you joined us! Random seems to be the key, which is hard for some people. Some just put the pieces into a paper bag, what they blindly pull out is what they use  |
Welcome to our group as far as scrap quilts go I am the type that needs pattern and direction I have yet to do a scrappy quilt. Some use the paperbag method throw the scraps in and pick them at random this makes some amamzing quilts. I cannot wait to see what you come up with! Take care!

Sundayp when i make my scrappy quilts, I put all my piecies if fabrics in a sack and take it as I grab it out of the sack, thay turn out so pretty.
|
I love the look of scrap quilts but have a hard time because I think everything should be "matchy". I did, however, make one and the only way I could make it work was to cut my squares up, sort them by lights, meds, and darks, and put them into paper bags and just "grab" them as I pieced them together. No plan and it turned out awesome! Good luck!

Welcome Sundayp. On scrap quilts....my feeling is that while two or three fabrics might not go together well, a thousand will live quite happily together. A must for me is one fabric that will pull all those disparate fabs together. This can be the background or borders. What has been posted about light dark and medium is right on. Squint your eyes up and step back a bit to see if the contrast is right. Remember others will be viewing your quilt from about three feet away while you are only inches from it. Distance helps give perspective.

Hi and welcome from California. I was taught to put all the scraps in a bin and what ever you pull out is the next fabric you use. Takes the stress out of it and in the end they turn out great. Only thing I ever changed was if I pulled a color the same as the last then I pulled a different one. How ever you do it just have fun
