Hello all:
I received an email from Loretta and decided to intoduce myself to you all. I have been receiving newsletters for over 4 years but did not join the forum until last fall (well spring for me, LOL). So here is a brief intro from me.
I am a New York girl transplanted to Argentina. My husband of 15 years is an Argentine and we retired here. My sister taught me to quilt in 2006 and before that I did not know how to sew. My first project was matching PJ's for my 3 grandsons and then I made a queen sized memory quilt for my son and daughter-in-law. I have been quilting ever since.
I love the forum. All the girls are so helpful and have so much knowledge that they are all willing to share.
It is impossible to get any 100% cotton printed material here. They just don't sell it. So I order from the internet or send to my sister and she mails it to me. When I visit NY to see my family I usually forward material to my son and take it back with me.
Look forward to many more years with you all on the forum.
Sincerely,
Penny

Welcome from California. How exciting to live in Argentina!

(but sorry fabric isn't readily available---
-although even those of us in the US are
relying on "online" resources----the fabrics are cheaper
if you hunt around)

I bet you are fluent in Spanish, wish I was......

Welcome from Oregon. Looking forward to seeing some of your quilts when you have time to share them. It would be fun to see some photos of the area where you live if you ever want to share that too. This is a very fun quilt board & there is always something interesting going on. Glad you could join in.

thank you all for your welcome. Some wanted to see some pictures of some of my work so far. I did post some a couple of weeks ago but darned if I can find where I put them in the forum, spent last 20 minutes looking for them. LOL So here are a couple that i have done thus far.
BeachLady to answer your question I do try and go back every year. I usually stay with my son or my girlfriend for about a month when I go. I miss everyone terribly, especially my son and his family. Miss my 3 little booglets, my grandsons like crazy. I promised the youngest I would teach him how to skip stones on the water when I come up. Planning on going in July this year, God willing.
Loretta, to answer your question my next project is a Japanese quilt theme using fabric I recently brought and had shipped here. This will be the second quilt for my son and his wife. The already have the memory quilt attached and each of my grandsons have a quilt in their favorite subject, dinosaurs, bugs and trucks. Cannot work on anything right now as I just had cataract surgery and the eye burst a blood vessel so lens will not be implanted this coming Monday. Makes one appreciate their site as I can only see light and shadows out of the eye right now.
Hello to everyone else in the US and around the world. It is 98 degrees here as we have summer while you all are in winter. Baking in the heat, thank God I have air conditioning in the bedroom, LOL. Hope you enjoy the postings of the quilts I did. The memory quilt in yellow is my first for my son and his wife, queen sized.
Regards,
Penny

And here is the one I did for my eldest grandson for Christmas. Do not have picture of the other two as I did them while I was there last year and left them with my daughter-in-law to give to the two youngest for Christmas. They are 10, 7 and 4 repectively. They all loved their quilts and each one thanked me personally and told me what they liked most about their quilts. They are great kids if I do say so myself, LOL.
Shemjo, quick answer to your question. Yes, it is a nice retirement here as we have a limited income and could not afford to live as well in the US as we can here. But for me, THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THE USA!!!!I would rather be there any day then here but we do not have a bad life here. Just very far away from my family and I miss them all.
Regards,
Penny

My oldest grandson loves Scooby Doo but when I hunted for the material I could not find it. Now I see it on Fabric.com. But he said that is ok Mammie, I love dinosaurs too. Make me that and he loves it!!

JCL in FL 02-20-2009 09:39 PM

Welcome from FL. Some of us very spoiled by the availability of cotton material. Most of us complain we spend so much but in reality most of us get by with our passion very economically. Post some of your work, we love to look at each others things.

pennyswings 02-21-2009 07:46 AM

JCL:
Thanks for the welcome. I do love this site. Such nice people and so much good advice. Going to post sometime today and ask opinions of new material I am going to use and advice on choice of pattern. You will probably be able to see that in the topic Pictures as I will go there and it will probably be viewed on the last or next to last page of the post if you are curious (sorry for the spelling, LOL). :D
Thank God I am able to get some really good buys online and the internationa shipping has come down a lot. Usually it only costs $12.00 for up to 10 yards of fabric. Shipping still kills me because I always think of the yard or two of fabric I could buy with that money but HEY it is still so much cheaper then it use to be.
I did post some of my quilts in this thread, look on page two at the top of this page and you will see them there.

Lisa:
I can't imagine how cold it is in Michigan. My granddad use to call it tree snapping weather. It gets so cold the sap in the trees freeze and the tree explodes. It never gets that cold here. Here is like the weather in So Calif. In the winter the coldest it gets here is about 32 at night then goes into the 50's and 60's during the day. Not bad. My sister lives in Ithaca, NY and it gets really cold there too.
Thank you, and the others, for the compliments on my design. Got the basket weave blocks out of a 2003 quilting magazine. They used it to make a quilt from japanese kimono fabric. I cut out the teddy bears from extra fabric from the back and fused and handquilted them onto the blocks, also handquilted the border and machine quilted the rest. I like combining hand quilting with machine quilting.

Pam:
Thanks for the compliment. If you are interested then see my answer to LisaT on page 3 of this post for how I got the idea for the blocks.

Fairway 02-21-2009 09:32 AM

I am like you. I have admired everyone's work but have not posted anything. Maybe one day. Welcome again, from Fallston, Maryland.

pennyswings 02-21-2009 09:54 AM

Fairway:
Thank you so much for the welcome
I did post some of my work on the second page of this post. Just go to page 2 found at the top or bottom of the screen. Now you have to post some of your work. Everyone loves to see what each person has done. Go to the Quilting Forum main page then to the topic "Pictures" and see what everyone has done. There are so many beautiful designs and so much good advice too.
