Welcome to the board!! In response to your question, I personally would not recommend it because that type of binding tends to be weaker than some of the other types, as well as giving more of a less tailored look to the quilt. I kind of found that out the hard way. And, if you are concerned about binding, go to the local fabric store (JoAnn's, Hancocks, etc.) and get a tape maker. They are great for making a quick, strong, binding for around the edges of the quilt. For a beginner, I would suggest getting a 1" tape maker. It is easier to place the made binding/tape on the edges. Once again, welcome, and happy quilting!!

Welcome. You most definitely can, just be very careful when you square it up that you don't cut the backing.

When I started quilting, I wrapped the backing around to the front for the binding and hand stitched. I was not sure how the seperate binding worked so this worked for me. Welcome to be board. You will love it here.
