Hi! My name is Dinah. I have been quilting for a long time, but somewhere down the line I missed paper piecing. Don't mean to sound like a dummy, but I have no idea what paper piecing is. Could someone please tell me? Also, I need some opinions please. When my grandmother died at the age of 93 she had been piecing 2 quilts tops. I inherited them, but now don't know what to do with them. They have so much sentimental value & I'm torn between leaving them as they are or quilting them. Any opinions?

Welcome from northern NY
Yes, we need pictures. I'm sure you will want to finish them off. They will be so much nicer.

Quilt them. No one likes to leave behind an unfinished piece of art.

What to do then? That's a problem. I wore out the first totally hand done quilt my grandmother made for me. She took pity and made me a new one because I felt so badly. I haven't used the newer one much. One daughter recently reminded me that the children were allowed to use it when they were ill. What do I do with it now? It was on the back of a rocker on my room, but was removed because of the constant cat hair. The cat is gone, so it could go back there even though it doesn't match the room.

I don't have any pictures. I just took them out of storage. They are both scrap quilts with no particular pattern, simple strips & squares. I don't have a camera, but will try to get someone to take pictures. Thanks for all the feedback on my quilt tops & paper piecing.

Hi from Ohio and yes you should quilt them. If they came from your grandmother, your father or mother would probably like to see them finished.

Welcome from another Michigander, formally Mississippi!!! I still have the quilt my Grandmother( who lived there at Laurel) made me when I turned 18. I wouldn't take anything for it.

Quiltzilla 12-07-2010 11:18 AM

I think that some people would preserve the quilts, keeping them just as they are, as an unfinished work. Personally, I hope you find a way to complete these quilts. It would connect you to your grandmother's world.

Hi Dinah:

There is a wonderful quilt guild in Hattiesburg - the Pine Belt Quilters, check out their website:

http://www.pinebeltquilters.com

There are nearly 175 members of all levels, monthly classes offered and always help in guiding you with any questions you may have.

You are welcome to attend a meeting to judge for yourself - the monthly meetings are held the 3rd Wednesday of the month.

I think you would enjoy the group - they are of all ages and always willing to help new quilters. :-)
