Welcome from Washington State. I purchased my sewing machine at Costco for about $175. I can do a lot with it, including machine quilting. It also has some special stitches that are fun to use. I would check out Leah Day online. She is self taught. She specializes in machine quilting, but she is a great teacher.
If you go to JoAnns or a quilt store, you can get a packet of fabric, called a charm pack, that is already cut in 5 inch squares. Then, just start sewing them together. You will end up with a small lap quilt or table topper. My greatest piece of advice would be to have no fear. If you make a mistake, so what! You will learn lots. Just have fun!! |

welcome its a great hobby when i started i got a cutting mat a rotery cutter a 6X24" ruler and my first quilt was a rail fence pattern. i had a machine already but i would recomend if you dont whant to put alot off money into it that you get eather one off the brother quilting machines from walmart or a used machine off kijjiji or craigs list. have fun

Hi Misty, Basically a cutting board is a protective cutting mat you put your fabric on & cut with a rotary cutter without damaging anything (tabletop, countertop, etc). Using a mat & rotary cutter is faster than cutting everything by hand with scissors. You'll learn a lot here & we're glad to have you. :) Welcome from Florida!:)

Thanks all. Classes sound like a way to go. I looked for a rail fence and it is beautiful. Hope mine will be too. As for the machine, you all gave some great suggestions. I will check them out and will look for a good basic inexpensive machine. I am not ready to spend lots of cash for a high end. I am not even sure I would know how to use a high end machine. LOL Going shopping tomorrow and will bring home some of the basics that have been suggested. Thanks you guys and this board is a great place.

I will check out Leah Day. I have a question about the charm packs. Are 5 inches big enough to do any thing? What about the fabric that gets cut off? Are they usually big enough to make anything? My biggest fear I think is getting stuck with a needle. OUCH.

Hi and welcome from Lebanon Oregon!! I piece my quilts with my 40 year old Viking 60 20 and machine quilt with my Juki which cost about $900. The Juki can be used for piecing also, but I love sewing on my old viking. I got it new when I was 15 years old, 40 years ago, WOW!!
