Modern vs Traditional

Hi from Oregon. I have been "lurking" on the site. Getting lots of info, learning new stuff and having grins and giggles but decided to join in on the fun. I first learned to quilt long ago and far away when I took a quilt class for beginners. It was hand quilting using templates and cutting everything with scissors. (That was before rotary cutters!) As a working person I had little time but by hit and miss and off and on I taught myself to piece on my machine.
My sister is a devout quilter, even has a longarm quilting business, encouraged me all the time. But recently a couple things happened. One, I got a decent sewing machine. Yup, that made all the difference. I love my Janone, enough said. Second, I now have time to sew. And finally, I learned to hand dye material so I can get the colors I want.
Funny thing about my quilts....When I make a full size (bed or crib) I make traditional patterns. But when I make a wall hanging, I go for modern. Am I the only conflicted quilter out there:)
Anyway, glad to be here and join this wonderful circle of friends. Taino Jan

Haven't gotten into wallhangings. I like traditional quilts. May stem from grandmother and great aunt that made traditional quilts when I was growing up. Welcome from Texas.

I have also been lurking for some time also. I started quilting many years ago with hand piecing and hand quilting. It has only been in the last several years that I have made the switch to macine piecing. Now I need to learn how
to machine quilt.

I love the traditional quilts. But I am like you when it comes to wall hangings. I have one hanging in our living room the was just rattling around in my head. I did it and love it. It looks like planets in outer space.

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. I have to admit that I am mostly a traditional quilter. Maybe because the order in a traditional quilt, no matter how intricate, calms my soul.

I'm traditional in design, modern combos in color, and then completely modern in techniques...scissors? what's that? templates are only for already stripped together fabrics, and one block at a time means one was all i was making!

Would love to see your design. Have you figured out how to post photos? I haven't but hope you can.

Hi from Peoria, Arizona. No, you aren't the only one who likes both traditional and modern. I am a very new quilter, but I want to do them all! It sounds like you have quite a lot of experience. I look forward to seeing pictures of your work! :)

There are so many ways to make beautiful quilts. I do mostly "art" wall hangings, but more traditional charity and bed quilts. Good work, no matter what style, amazes and delights me.

Southern California Desert quilters welcome you too. Funny how we eventually get to do things we enjoy...if we live long enough. :)

Thank you everyone for your warm welcomes. It is so good to know that this hobby (obession:D) is not limite to just one style.
