I am new to this message board and would like to introduce myself as a new quilter. And share with everyone the project I will be working on for who knows how long! I recently "acquired" my mother-in-laws cotton fabric collection of over 50 years. My plan is to make her 6 children and 23 grandchildren a quilt "like grandma would have made them. " She's 88 years old and about as excited as I am for her fabric to be used in this way. I started with four 12" piles of prints and ended up renting a trailer to haul "contrasts, edges and backings" from Idaho to Texas. It all needs to be washed as grandma had a "friend" eating candy in her material...... I would LOVE anyone's input. Should I make these 29 quilts all the same or different? Should I make them to be used or as wall hangings? What would YOU do?

Well, I think I would make them all slightly different. It would be hard to find enough of each fabric to make them all exactly alike. Also it would be hard to make each one an "individual" Personally, I make quilts for people to use. you can do a lap size quilt. That's a lot of quilts you have to put together.
Wall hangings would be quicker.

Maybe pick simple patterns and hand tie them?
I would make quilts large enough to be used on a couch, so they can wrap "Grama's Love" around them :D:D:D

As a new quilter, this will become a journey for you, and as time goes on, you'll be ready for new and different challenges. Plus you can have the fun of matching the fabric with the individual.

I would make them all different so you don't get bored with only using 1 pattern. There are so many out there! It sounds like you've got oodles and oodles of fabric. Lap quilts would be awesome! Looking forward to seeing them!

Welcome, I would start out with the younger kids first with simple patterns an quilting. Then as you get the hang of things you could progress to more challenging patterns and designs for the older ones that will take care of the quilt. You dont know it yet bet your at the beginning of an addiction! Good luck with your quilts! We will all be here for the support and guidence in you addiction!

I'm nearly in tears at these quick and sweet responses. I did mean same or different pattern. There is so much material so none would be the same in color/print. I also can't make them per individual just boy/girl. I couldn't bear to have anyone say... "his/hers is better, fancier, prettier then mine". So the plan will be to make them all and wrap them up and everyone picks a secret package; Oldest grandchild to youngest. Hopefully grandma can be there!

Hello and welcome from the UK! What an exciting challenge. Why not ask the recipients what sort of quilt they would like? Maybe give them some ideas for simple patterns/sizes?

What a great idea. We did the same with my FIL's shirts after he passed on. We made teddy bears out of them and put them all in a black plastic bag and the grands just reached in blind and pulled one out.

In that case, better to make them all the same size and a traditional style pattern, just varying the colours. Lots of the traditional blocks are certainly unisex. www.quilterscache.com is just one site with a large number of free blocks to choose from.
