For starters I would suggest just squares. You don't have to make it too big. I've seen people almost rip their hair out struggling with triangles in their first quilt. If you did want to start with a bit more than just squares you could look at some hour glass blocks.
Go to The Quilter's Cache. This is a library of hundreds of blocks and instructions. Feel free to PM me but if you post requests for help there are a lot of knowledgeable people on this board who are always pleased to help others.
One thing about quilters is they love to share.
You'll love it here and find it very addictive. Welcome.

Try your local Library for some books before you spend alot of money on them, then you will have more money for fabric :) If you have any questions someone here will be able to help.

HI. Welcome from Oregon. My first quilt was a sampler wall hanging. That way I could find out what techniques I liked doing. I took a class and that helped a lot.

Hello from Atlanta, Georgia. I'm new at quilting (about 2 years), and I can't find enough time to quilt as much as I want. After I made a few quilts (self-taught), I found two books that were of interest to me. After reading them, I wished I had read them PRIOR to my first three quilts. I found them interesting and most helpful.

"Quilts! Quilts!! Quilts!!! The Complete Guide to Quiltmaking" (second edition) authored by Diana McClun and Laura Nownes

"Guide to Machine Quilting" authored by Diane Gaudynski
