Old man- New quilter 11-08-2009 08:06 AM

Just started quilting a few months ago. Finished my first quilt about a week ago.
My wife has been quilting for about 15 years. We were watching a Fons & Porter show one day that had a quilt hanging behind the guest who happened to be John Flynn.
I told her that if she could find the pattern for that quilt, that I would make it. I have sewing machine experience from having been in the Navy for 21 years.
She found the pattern and it turned out to be a variation of his double wedding ring. Wife said " Nope, you ain't starting THERE." She showed me how to do a basic nine patch ( and I thought she had said ' nine PACK ' - I figured it was a six pack and a half so, I was all for it ).
Bottom line, I made a baby quilt made of nine 'patch'.
I have the double wedding ring one about 1/3 done and it looks like it will be around for awhile before it's completed.
We now own TWO Janome 6600's

Welcome to the board form Illinois. You won't lack for male company around here. There are several guys around who make beautiful quilts.

Mousie 11-08-2009 08:30 AM

Welcome and if you want some inspiration as well as male company, come on over to the Personal Diaries and Announcements section after clicking on back to home page (at top of page)...go down to bottom and you'll find it. Then go to Eddie's Cave.
You will be impressed, inspired, entertained, and best of all, welcomed.
Btw, I am not assuming you don't know how to use a computer, lol,...just when I came to board, I THOUGHT it was big then...it has grown since I have been here.
Welcome from Florida 8) .
We don't check for 'gender' here...we are too busy, asking, "Where's the pictures of quilts? "

Hi and Welcome from Northern Indiana ! You did a great job on the quilt for your nephew

Old man- New quilter 11-10-2009 07:08 PM

Thank you all for the warm welcomes and comments on my 'first'. I guess, as any quilter is, that I am my own worse critic because I guess that I just know I'll do better the next time, and so on.
Some of you asked to see the "work in progress" one that I'm doing and I am not at a point where it can be shown. Sorry. I am in the middle of piecing it and have gotten to a point where I need someone to show me how and where to continue. The melons and the other parts just don't seem to want to play nicely together.
I promise you all that when I get to a point that any of it would be recognizable, I will post it here ( assuming that I don't forget how to do that).

Once again, thank you for your comments.
Bob

Have you and your wife been to the big quilt expo at Pullalup, WA ( not sure I spelled that town right???) Lots of neat quilting/fabric/workshops that go on there. I think it is put on end of February.

Welcome aboard, Bob, and thanks for all those years you gave to all of us who were safe at home. You are one of the many who made that possible for us........thank you again.

Now to your quilting.........what a great job. Thanks for sharing.

I just recently asked my husband to do a few blocks for me...but they will be wooden blocks for outdoors.

I will post them as they get completed...it may be a while but I am sure that it will happen..

I am also proud of my youngest who also served in the Navy......
