Hello! I am a new quilter. For starters I am finishing up some projects that someone else had started and taking a class to learn to do things right. My new dilema is how to finish a crazy quilt. My mother's quilting group gave her embellished quilting pieces made up of all types of fabrics, includes buttons embroidery, lace etc. and backed with a stiffening fabric. My group said that crazy quilts do not have sashing and because each of the pieces is signed I shouldn't put a backing on it. So I need ideas on how to connect the pieces. I thought I could sew a narrow bias (1/4 inch seam) on the pieces and then butt them up against each other to avoid bulky connections. I then could apply another bias seam cover to the back side to cover the back seams ( by hand). Is this too unorthodox? Got a good idea - please.

Welcome to the board, a good place for advice and help. Quilting "rules" are made to be broken. I have seen crazy quilts with sashing but have never seen one without backing unless it is waiting to be finished. Most crazy quilts are tied instead of quilted and sometimes don't have batting between the front and back. I'm sure you will gets lots of ideas on how to join the pieces. I don't have a good idea of what to do since the pieces have been signed on the back and I guess you want that to be visible. I'm looking forward to seeing what others have to say.
