Hi and welcome from New York. No problem if you cannot lower your feed dogs. You can always cover them or just sew without lowering them. All you need is darning foot and lots of practice. Lots of info on the web and here on QB on how to FMQ.

I didn't know that you can make swirls without dropping your dog feet. Do you have to fight with the dog feet or does it go like it would if they was dropped. My daughter wants the swirls but I didn't think I could do it because of the dog feet. So you do the swirls with the dog feet up? And if I can cover them...what do I cover them with?

Welcome from North Carolina! We are glad you are here! My grandmother made me, my sister and brother 5 quilts each and hand embroidered our names in them. I treasure them.

Don't worry about covering them, I have neverdropped my feed dogs to FMQ, and I FMQ alot! Simply put on the darning foot and go! But DON"T try this for the first time on a quilt you just made, it takes practice to FMQ. Sandwich some 12 inch squares and practice on that.
