Hello, I have been sewing since age 13 but new to quilting the past few months. Single Mom on tight budet and can't afford quilting classes to learn short-cuts etc. So was wondering if there is a great book out there that anyone would recommend that would help me? I have only done a few paper-piece projects so far, but want to learn traditional block and scrap quilting.

Hello and welcome from West Tennessee. There are great tutorials on the board and also Missouri Star Quilt that can help with your quilting. Good luck.

Welcome from central Florida! Check out what is available at your local library - that way you can see if the book is really something that you need to own rather than something you can borrow occasionally. There are so many tutorials on this board (and elsewhere) that books are in danger of becoming redundant. Start with simple squares or strips and master the 1/4" seam - it's like your driver's license. Best Wishes!

Welcome from Colorado! I agree with the other posts about the tutorials here and Missouri Star. Another good website is www.quilterscache.com. They have great patterns of all kinds and good instructions. If you get stuck, drop a note to the quilting board. The quilters here are glad to help.

Welcome from southern Minnesota. I have watched a lot of the tutorials from this site here. They have helped me with alot of the wish list and increased more to the list. I have also gone to the library on several ventures.Makes it better to see if it has what I want first. Helps with keeping the books from collecting dust. :D

I like this. This is exactly what I did to learn to quilt first. I took out every book the library had and read them. Then I signed up for a quilt class at the local quilt store. Learned so much from that class. But I had to learn to cut on my own and also to sew that darn scant 1/4 seam. Took forever to learn that. Welcome to the board from Illinois. and Good Luck.

PatchGirl 09-14-2011 05:23 AM

Yes, I have been reading over a lot of the tutorials and the one on the "scant 1/4 seam," was at this point the most beneficial as that would explain why even some of my little projects dont't quite match up no matter how hard I try! Now I know! Thanks:)

Welcome from Maryland . . .

Can't wait to see some of your work. Look for books on scrappy quilts. They are great on a tight budget. Take donations of fabrics from friends and family. Even old clothes can be turned into quilts.

Welcome from Maryville, TN! I, too, have recently started quilting and have learned most of what I know about quilting from this board. I am amazed at how much good information I have found here. You'll learn so much here.

QuiltnLady1 09-14-2011 06:24 AM

Welcome!!

There are a lot of ways to quilt on a shoe string. Check garage sales and thrift shops for fabric -- both old clothes and yardage. I have also found some great quilting books at garage sales, thrift stores and used book stores (but I only bought these after I knew what authors are best). For good basic instruction, no one can beat Eleanor burns books -- she really takes things step by step and you can frequently find her older books cheap.

Welcome from East Tennessee. You'll fine lots of information here on the board and people willing to answer pretty much any question you might have. Fons and Porter have an excellent book that deals with quilting basics. Last time I checked, it was available in a 3-ring binder format so that you could add your own notes as you learned.
