Do you have a quilt shop anywhere nearby? That would be my first step. See if they offer classes, and take one. Some shops have "set" classes, ones that start on a certain date, last for a certain number of weeks and they teach a certain project. Others have more "freeform" classes, where you start when you want and they teach you whatever it is you want to learn. I would look for a shop that teaches these freeform type of classes and tell her what you want to do. Most teachers have years and years of practical experience and can help you with any problems or questions you have. This would give you a feel as to whether you want to continue or not.
