newbie! :) Just saying hi and showing off my first squares!

Hi guys! As the topic says, I'm a newbie. I've wanted to quilt for some time but just have never had time. Well, my hubby gave me a quilt kit with fabric for Christmas so I decided it was time to learn! I went and picked up a few other pieces of fabric to go along with the fabric in the kit, and last night had a fun night with my mom having her teach me how to use the sewing machine and sew a straight line. :) Yes, Like I said I'[m really new to this! :D

BUT I made 4 squares last night and I'm so excited. :) Here is the tutorial for the quilt that I am following:

http://whiletheysnooze.blogspot.com/...t-kind-of.html

and here are pictures of my first few squares!

Quick question - where can one get a good tutorial on the actual QUILTING part using a regular sewing machine? Is it possible? I don't have the money to invest in a quilting machine at the moment and am hoping that I will be able to use a regular sewing machine!

Thanks for any and all help and information. :)

Thanks for the warm welcome! :) Btw - I'm in Louisiana. Any others on here from La? :)

Thanks for the tips on where to look for free motion quilting tutorials. I'm wondering - how difficult will it be to do if I don't have an inset machine or a table that sits at my machine height? Not sure yet how much I want to invest in this hobby until I do at least one quilt. :D

oh and I just have to share - finished 4 more blocks! :) Sure I have something like 40 to go, but it's still exciting. :)

Welcome from southeastern Oklahoma. Love your blocks. You are doing a wonderful job.

rhapsdy 01-17-2012 07:25 PM

well the paper on the back of these blocks is helping them lay flat and look pretty - I really like the whole paper piecing way to do this. Seems easier somehow than having to get it all perfectly and straight without it. (and thank you!)

Question - how big is a normal throw quilt, like to keep in a sofa to snuggle with while watching movies? I'm trying to decide what the finished size of this quilt should be and if I'm going too big for my first try at this whole quilt thing. *laugh*

awesome colors! you are doing a great job! Yes, you can quilt using your machine... your machine will need a walking foot if you are going to quilt in straight lines, or the ability to drop the feed dogs (the part that grabs the fabric and pulls it under the needle)... a special quilting foot would be nice, too.... you can go to youtube and find all kids of videos on machine quilting... my advice is to watch a bunch of them to give you some diversity... everyone does it differently.

Looks good to me, keep up the good work!

Here is a link to one of the best free motion sites that I think that is out there. She does it all on a domestic machine. This year she just started doing a new kind of tutorial where you can go right along with her. There is alot to her site so check it all out. There are tons of designs and ideas as to how to do things. Good luck on quilting. It's good that you have your mom there to help you out. Both of these links are for the same person; the first one is for her latest lessons.

Welcome! Great blocks, using paper piecing really helps take the worry out of keeping it straight. You will have an awesome quilt, show us pictures when you complete it.

Hi Rhap,

So glad to have another quilter! And my dear - looking at your blocks - you're already a quilter. Now just go forth and multiply those blocks, into a quilt and that one into more quilts. I haven't seen many tutorials for actual quilting, but I wasn't looking. I'm sure they're out there. Look at the tutorials here first, then let your fingers do the walking in the world wide web - there are tutorials for just about everything we do. We love to share. When all else fails. Ask in the "main" section here. Someone will make you one, or talk you through it. We're not like bakers that keep our favorite recipes a secret; we're really good about sharing information and lending a helping hand whenever we can. Sounds like with your mom you have a great start - that's the best resource to start with - willing hands beside you :) Happy quilting and again, welcome to the nicest quilting place on earth.
