Welcome from Ontario, Canada!
I've been thinking that the tube technique would be great as placemats. Also placemats would be a good project to learn QAYG. |

I made paper pieced birds and then added enough borders around the edges to make them the size I wanted. Then I used an old oval placemat to trim. Used Warm and Natural batting so they would lie (lay?) flat. Did a quick turn, some quilting and they were done. Fast and easy.

My first quilting project was a rail fence place mat. It was a lot of fun & very easy to put together. If you google free quilt patterns beginner you can find bunches of easy patterns.
Good luck  |

I bought a plastic one at Dollar Tree and then make a template for the patttern, allowing for seam allowance. I also teach some ladies at our church and placemats are easy. The most popular are the ones we make with one side Christmas and the other side Thanksgiving/Fall. You can also make pieced ones and then cut to template. I also make round ones the same way.
