Welcome from Maryland. I am so happy for you with your first grandbaby. How exciting! If you don't mind my asking, what is your price range for a machine? That determines what we recommend.

I strongly suggest you go try each model out to see which one feels right to you.

I love my older Berninas. You could search local sewing and vac stores to see what is available. Support would be important in case you run into any problems. Most importantly--enjoy the process of creating wonderful quilts! Visit the QB often--inspiration abounds!

Welcome from OHIO! Congrats on that new grandbaby. My sewing machine is over twenty years old and I still love it so much, I wouldn't think of replacing it so I know nothing about new machines.

Welcome back from Texas too. When you get to know your machine, you might think of taking a few classes. Quilt stores have them but try for beginners. also tutes from Eleanor Burns of Quilt In A Day are great. she wastes a tiny bit of fabric but gives very good instructions. She used to teach children, so she does speak as if you were a child, he, he.
good luck. keep on here and ask when ever you need something.
