I am setting up a new sewing room and would like suggestions for how to store things such as scissors, bobbins, etc on a wall. I would like the storage to include small "boxes" that hang from the wall and can hold smaller items.

My suggestion: Don't do peg boards... I really don't like the look of them.
Check out some of the organizer stores and see what they have done. Elfa (sp?) storage systems are cool.

shoe holder, like you buy in the closet organizing section. They have usually like 15 or so slots. Can't say enough about having a peg board though!
Congrats on your new sewing room. Don't forget to post pics!

Maybe check out storage solutions at the auto store or the hardware store? Tool Time Tuesday, by sewmanyways, has had several storage ideas of the years. Check out her blog and click on the "tool time tuesday" label.

Ikea has some really attractive "storage solutions." Not all items are available for purchase online, but it might at least give you some ideas you could adapt.

Welcome from south central Kentucky!!

Since I don't like clutter, I don't store my items on the wall. My sewing/cutting/pressing station is a huge, solid wood door on two filing cabinets. The filing cabinets hold all ofthe small items (pins, seam rippers, tape measures, rotary cutters, etc).

Since I like my scissors to be handy, I have them on my "door" in a cute metal bucket.

Good luck!

I am in the process of moving and have organized my new quilting room by using the white plastic hooks made by by Contact. I'm using the ones with the metal hooks for my scissors, rulers, etc. about my L shaped table that I have my sewing machine and large cutting mat. They are working great and don't mess up the wall; and if you change things around they come off easily and you can buy extra tabs and use them again!

And they look much better than pegboard. I have found them at Ace Hardware, K-Mart, and Joanne's.

Welcome from Ontario, Canada.
I don't have wall organizers. I have 3 drawer organizers on wheels and a bookcase with bins.

Agree. I have a magnetic bar for scissors and there are round spice boxes which are magnetic and could be used for notions, many kinds of shelving which are not too expensive.

Hello from Iowa, good luck, I am the worst when it comes to organization.

QuiltnLady1 07-23-2011 10:20 AM

Love my pegboard!! I have hooks of all sizes that I can hang things (like rulers and scissors) and shelves (bought the shelving at Lowes, but the supports at Home Depot -- don't know why I can't get both items at the same store) and arranged the shelves to accommodate the size of my boxes. Don't know about not liking the look of pegboard -- things are so full I can't see it much.

"Hey" from Oklahoma. I am a very organized person. I absolutely CANNOT deal with clutter- it shuts my brain down. If you saw my sewing room, you would also think I'm a liar LOL, but the problem is, it's so cluttered that my brain won't allow me to go in and organize!!

ploverwi2 07-23-2011 01:54 PM

Yippee!!finally, another quilter who's cutting table is a door. I have the huge cutting mat from Joann's on my door, and it fits perfectly.
