I am having a huge problem now because I was taught to always pre-wash! I am getting ready to make a 30's quilt, I had pre washed as I filled my stash. The problem is I want this quilt to crinkle up good and I want to use un-washed fabric! and everyone says u can not mix the washed and unwashed on ur quilt. So my stash is useless and I have had to buy all new 30's stuff.....which is sad cause I had about a 3rd already bought. I will no longer pre wash until time to use the fabric.....and see if I need to or not!!!

I started 3 yrs ago and I pre-washed. Then I made a quilt with 4" charms I bought on ebay and didn't pre-wash those. I notice the fabric was much easier to work with since it had the original fabric sizing (sp) on it. Now I never prewash. I will sometimes rinse the extra dye out of some batki reds if they dont pass my bleeding test (put a snip of fabric in a cup of hot water).

Hello and welcome from Minnesota!

I wash ALL my yardage fabrics before putting them away. I don't buy precuts. My fabrics come from different places, are made by different companies and have different thread counts. The new ones have chemicals on them, some dyes are stable and some are not. If any shrinking or bleeding is going to occur, I prefer it happens before I spend tons of time making the quilt.
