Hello and welcome from Germany. I belong to the fabric washing half, I wash my fabrics as I go to use them. If I am only washing a yard or two for a certain project I will wash other fabrics of like colours.
The reasons are chemicals/smells, bleeding and shrinkage.

I wash my fabric because I thought you should...sometimes dark fabric fades...if you do wash, be sure to wash everypiece, since some pcs. will shrink more than others....

I wash in Very hot water -- usually by hand and then pop it into the dryer with a large towel. If I wash by machine I do it on delicate. Fabric does shrink a bit. And I hate the smell of most new fabrics.

Especially if it is a dark or red fabric. I once make a red and white quilt and didn't wash one of the reds. It ran just enough to spoil the contrast
