Hi, I'm fairly new to quilting, and am having a blast. I'm currently working on my first 2 quilts for my kids so lots of leeway! My question is what is so special about featherweights? I inherited one several years ago from my great-aunt. It was made in 1939 and that's all I know about it. I actually don't even know if it works... I guess I should find out.

Hello and Welcome to the board :D:D:D
They are a nice, light weight machine that sew beautifully :D:D:D |
Hello, and welcome from Idaho!
I can't answer your question, but if go to the search tab at the top of the page you will find many posts about them. |
Welcome from NE Indiana  I've asked myself that question several times. They are cute, but I'll take my modern "do everything" machines anyday.

They are so cute, and very light weight so easy to take to classes, bees or guild or to retreats. They are supposed to make a really great streight stitch. and they are so cute! They are easy to take care of also with out having to take them in to shop and pay $50. or more each time to be serviced. Billy has a whole tut on how to care for our machines, I will be really looking into doing the care of my FW, but want to know how to do it properly. So will be checking out Billy's thread.
I would say check it out and clean it and give it a try, you might fall in love with it, and you sure can't beat the price! |
welcome!

They are great to take out to sew! That's my travel machine.

How do I love my Featherweight? Let me count the ways. (with appologies to R. Browning or somewone who wrote that first.)
Dependable, very portable, (I go to a bee once a week and it is my Bee machine) Light at 12 lbs (heavy feathers i guess.) cute, easy to trouble shoot, easy to fix--usually a thread caught somewhere, did I say cute? takes up very small space at the bee, sews beautifully! easy into and out of my car. fits into a small wheeled trolley. AND it's so cute! |
It is a status symbol. Just mention Featherweight and everyone gasps. :) You'll be the envy of every other quilter, especially since you inherited it. Its a real keeper, so oil it up and try it out. Oh, and we'd love to see a picture of it.

In my excitement for you forgot to say Welcome to the board, you are going to love it here.

Hello and welcome from central Alabama.
FW are great to take with you, they have a great stitch, easy to maintain, and have a very happy hum when they sew. |

Hello and welcome from Ontario.

Welcome from Alberta, Canada. What everyone here has said about FW is so true. I want one so badly that my son is trying to find me one for Christmas.
|
They're wonderful machines. Like the others have said here, they're usually trouble free, easy to carry machines. I love mine but seldom get to use it like I'd like to. I don't consider mine a status symbol but I do consider myself lucky to have one. Guess you could say I'm a 'machine collector"! And I love all my machines. The featherweights are great for classes, don't take up much room & are easy to tote.
|
And if you decide you don't want it, I'll be glad to give you my address ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Hello and welcome from Germany :). Unfortunately, the featherweight my grandma used to sew with is gone. Someone just got rid of it, when I was still a child. Have to search for another one, I guess.

I would like a chance to buy it. I have always wanted one. J J |
Welcome to the board. When you finally try your FW out you will love using it. My husband always asks why are you using that old machine when you have so much money tied up in the new ones. I love using mine.

thank you all for the great replies, I will check the machine out one of these days (when I have quiet time in my sewing room) I'm looking forward to it. I've been almost afraid to use it- and the case is starting to fall apart at the handle so we try not to move it around a lot. I've had it for almost 10 years and am just now figuring out what it is and what it can do thanks to this site ;)

Welcome. I have to google Featherweight now!
|
Drag it out and try to sew with it. If it doesn't run then get it fixed. Once you begin to sew heavy seams, you'll realize why we love them so much.
|
You have to love the old machines...they were made to last. My little princess just sounds sew nice! It purrs. It coos. I love to pet her, caress her. But most of all, I love to sew with her. If you are not in love with yours, I'll take her off your hands. My granddaughter sewed on mine while making her quilt. When we had some delicate sewing to do, she moved over to my new machine because she could slow down the stitching speed. After sewing with the FW it was easy for me to regulate the speed with just the foot pedal. I would give your little one a loving home and pay for the shipping! LOL!
BTW, welcome from Iowa!! |
great for taking to class and is a real work horse. It isn't finicky like the computer machines. Get it out and try it. Great for classes where all you want to do it STRAIGHT STITCH. Jan
