2021 Monthly Color Challenge with Patterns by Jen
#1

I really enjoyed the 2020 Monthly Color Challenge and plan to participate again.
2021 will be inspired by vegetables. A bonus will be shared recipes. Food and quilting .... a can’t resist combo for me.
I bought a mystery FreeSpirit FQ bundle on sale at MSQC earlier this year. I’m using it as the primary source for fabric. I did need to buy a few extras to help with tougher colors like tan (for mushroom month) and lime (for ... well... lime month).
Here is the link to the 2021 Announcement.

Here are some of the FQs in the Mystery Freespirit bundle I bought last year. I’ll pick mostly from this bundle but will likely pull in something else ..... still haven’t found something tan for mushroom month. But I like the brown in the second row and may use it. The lime is also recently purchased but still not 100% sure about it.

The February block is available now. This month is yellow for lemons. Wonder what kind of recipes we will see from bloggers participating? Hmmmmm I’ve never tried to make lemon squares. Maybe someone will share a favorite recipe.
I still consider myself a beginning quilter and this is a great BOM for beginning quilters. If you sign up for the BOM, Jen will send you an email reminder each month with a link to the pattern for the new block. Clicking this link takes you to the pattern. At the bottom of the pattern, it has a “How to Video” link at YouTube where Jen walks us thru the pattern step-by-step.
She also has a Facebook group where we share photos of our blocks or ask questions.
The pattern is free for the month. After that it is $1 to purchase.

I would like to share a useful tutorial at Scrapdash for Square in a Square blocks. I tried following the BOM instructions for SIS. Consistently my center square ends up too large to trim without losing points. So both months, I’ve ended up using the snowball method to make the SIS.
In theory, I like Jen’s method. It doesn’t have waste by cutting off corners. But I just can’t get it to work for me. This tutorial at Scrapdash offers 10 different methods. I eventually will try them all.
