Default Charity Quilts--How to choose

We all like to donate to a variety of charities: it helps people and makes us feel good. Some places are "better" than others to donate to. I would encourage everyone to read the book, Toxic Charity, by Robert Lupton. It will give you some ideas to decide where to donate quilts.

There's also a website called Charity Navigator, that rates charities and how functional they are. It may be more useful for cash donations, but still worth checking out.

I make at least 21 Linus Quilts a month. I help our local chapter with the sorting and bagging up of the quilts to be delivered to hospitals and other institutions. I also sometimes donate supplies needed in the sorting and tagging process.

I agree with Mpspeedy. Project Linus is a great charity to donate to: either money, supplies, quilts or time. None is wasted and everything used is well appreciated!

I try to give most of my donation quilts locally; I do make project Linus quilts and Downey Quilts for kids but most of my donations go to the local Hospice house, the Women's Resource Center emergency shelter ( I always give a number of kids/tween quilts to the shelter during the holidays, kids who wind up in the shelters during that time of year are especially in need of something special just for them) . I also give quilts to our local fire department, when a family's home burns it is nice if the responding fire department has a couple quilts to give them. I also give to a couple local churches/organizations that put together special gift baskets during the holidays.

Yes, once you find where your quilts are needed the most, that is the way to go.

I make lap throws and baby quilts and donate them to our local nursing home, Ronald McDonald House, children's mercy hospital and a pregnancy crisis center.

I sew tops for Quilts of Valor. Have long armers that do the quilting for free.

I make Quilts for Kids quilts. I chose them specifically because the quilts go to children. I, personally, have a problem with who receives some charity. Before you get all worked up, I've done a lot of volunteer work in my town. I've seen the same adults go from agency to agency getting whatever they can free - when I know they don't actually need what they are receiving. They know what's available and they know how often they can ask for it. I've also see adults who needed help not ask for it because they were too embarrassed - sad. Anyway, long story short, that's why I chose to make children's quilts. Children don't choose their circumstances. A quilt can make any child feel special and loved. I've also made Quilts of Valor but not nearly as many as QFKs.
