Copyright laws can be clear as mud at times. It makes the part of me that likes to share freely sad. I followed the links to the picture of the quilt. The pattern is very interesting in a optical illusion way.

Interesting article and, in my mind, well researched and thought out.

I had never considered the issue of posting pictures of the quilts I've seen at quilt shows until I was acting as scribe for our judge at the last show and she mentioned having seen a particular quilt before - that had been posted online - by someone other than the quilter. For our show, it was a non-issue, but my understanding is that there are some venues that are pretty restrictive when it comes to judging quilts that have been "published" in some fashion - even if accidentally by someone unknown to the quilter.

Copyright laws stand up in court. Many attach rules to go along with the copyright. It's not against the law to break a rule.

I am using some wonderful old magazines now out of print and using all old patterns and many different settings and they encourage photo copying and quilting with friends so refreshing to find something for fun without money involved as our ancestors traded block patterns traced on newspaper and I still have some of those patterns and with all the free patterns on the net I don't have to worry about copy right I quilt for fun
