Default Have you ever quilted from the back of your quilt?

Connecting Threads has a wide backing fabric with a perfect pattern for machine quilting a stipple pattern on the quilt....from the back! It's been years since I've done this, in the late 90s early 2000s, when there were several different printed fabrics for just this sort of thing. Great help for those of us who need the help this would provide.

Interesting but I wonder how hard it would be to stay on the line.

I think it would be good to train muscle memory.

Interesting idea. Taking the thought another step.....I could draw a pattern on the backside with pencil and follow it.

One would have to go slowly, but from the front, it probably wouldn't matter if you missed some of the lines. Using the same color thread as the background of the backing fabric -- if it complemented the front -- would help hide mistakes, I'd imagine.

I have done this on several quilts. Most of them very scrappy and overall quilting suited them. Just quilt the back and have fun with it. Lines are just suggestions.

I've quilted from the back and it worked just fine! I try to follow the design of the backing fabric, but it's okay if you get off a little.

I have some fabric that is marked for Quilting. It is muslin and I love it. I purchased it at a quilt shop in Fulton, Illinois that has since closed. It was a wonderful shop and very successful..just had health issues. Still sadly missed.

I use fun stripe fabric for the backing of baby quilts and follow the stripe lines to quilt from the back. No marking at all.

When I made my DH's quilt for our 40th anniversary, I used a large fleece scenic panel for the backing. It was of a marsh scene with ducks and a goose flying in for a landing, and a moose in the foreground. Since the front of the quilt was different sized blocks representing memories of our years together, I quilted the marsh scene from the back. It turned out great.
