I've done this....works just fine; however, I recently bought a bodkin (on sale, cheap).

I have used a piece of yarn with a knot on the end to do the same turning. You could also use a piece of salvage edge from your fabric. I do have the tube turning tools but sometimes they just don't work that great but this soft method does.

Thanks so much for this tutorial. Just finished turning a couple of tubes and my fingers and hands were killing me in the process. This will solve my problem and I am so grateful!!!
