I've got 12 blocks (using a 10" layer cake) made and ironed. I'm putting 3 blocks across and 4 down. I'm going to do the cathedral window around the center block. I think I've figured out how to create another 'center' when I put the rows of blocks together. Got to play with it some more to be sure before I sew. I'm using holiday fabrics and made all my centers white. My first quilt for me.

I saw a block like this tonight that someone had made for a swap and it was a 12 inch block. So, yes, you can make different size blocks.

http://www.connectingthreads.com has the book for $10.19

I took my blocks to my Sat am quilt group for show and tell. Lo and behold, another gal had done this very same block. She used 5" squares and her center square was a 4" block. Her blocks were so cute. They were 9.5" unfinished blocks. So, you can used different size squares.

Thank you I just order one. I went to a bookstore and a quilt shop and they didn't have any.

Thanks again

Just what I need, another book (just bought it on ebay for 12.00) Thanks :)

carolaug 10-24-2010 12:46 AM

I am going to give this a try...I have two quilts to make for christmas....maybe more if this is as easy as it looks.

knlsmith 10-24-2010 02:43 AM

how neat! thanks

mommamac 10-24-2010 05:19 AM

great - I'm wondering if it can be adapted to make smaller blocks for a quick baby quilt. Shouldn't be a problem just might need more. thanks

Gizzy-Girl 10-24-2010 10:56 AM

Seems easy to do. I will have to give it a try.

BellaBoo 10-24-2010 12:18 PM

I understand now why the how to make the block is being shown on Youtube. The method has been free for years. The book has lots of different layouts with everything planned for you and is worth buying.

Here is a tutorial how to make a similar if not the same? block.

This looks awesome! On my list of "things I have to make."

Thank you, it's alittle different than the other 10 minute block but we like change. It just amazes me how these faster methods are done. I think it's great. Being I'm still pretty new at this, I see more quilts in my life with all the new methods out there.
Everyone enjoy your day

Are there more 10 minute block tutes? I saw the 3 seam block on you tube, but I'm reading there are others!! I'd love to see a few more 10 minute blocks. My granddaughter and I are going to start her quilt next week...I might have to show her other patterns if they are fast...cuz when you are a teen everything has to be in high gear!!!

cmilton 10-25-2010 02:47 PM

thank you. just what I was looking for!!

tooMuchFabric 10-26-2010 08:30 AM

BBF liked the sample one I made from 10" squares that I cut from my yardages,
and tried it on a pack of 5" squares from a pack she had collected somewhere.
CUTE!!!
And works great too.

thanks for posting the link, that was the one I used, it was so simple, and you could easily reduce the block size smaller blocks or make 1 huge block.
the link has so many wonderful tutorials if you click on the ones you want to look at on the side panel, I could spend all day there, I have now saved it as a short cut on my desktop

burnsk 10-26-2010 06:54 PM

You are very welcome. I get excited when I find things like this - easy, fast, and good looking when you're done. And you're still free to experiment and make it your own design.

I made a bow tie quilt and a spools quilt using this tecknique. Use the same color blocks for opposite corners and center block for bow tie block. By using HST in opposite corners using same color next to center block, you get a spool effect in the block. Of course, I made smaller blocks for my quilts. Hope this makes sense.

I ordered mine yesterday, right after I saw the tutorial. I set right about to making one and this is what the result was. It was easy to piece together, but let me tell you, if you decide to use 4 drastically different prints as I did, it will drive you nuts because the two you put together for the sides don't end up that way when you put it together on the final seam. I needed order in my quilt and I thought I would lose my mind taking seams apart and trying to figure out where they would end up. I'm sure this has to do with not having the book, so this time I will wait until it comes in, LOL.

You can do this...I don't have my book real handy, but my 16 year old GD and I made one together. It's easy as pie, once you get the hang of it. Start again...be sure your measurements are correct, piece it just as the video says. The book is very very helpful. But I attempted after watching the video and got the hang of it after a couple tries. If I can do it, honey, ANYONE can!!

cindysue4 10-26-2011 08:02 AM

I orderd the book. I think I might have pulled the center block to tight. I haven't tried it again. I'll wait for the book then if I can't get it I'll ask my quilt friends to come over and see if they can make it.
