Here's another one of those "I gotta do it" blocks. It really only takes 10 minutes to make the blocks once you have your squares cut. I made mine out of a "layer cake". I've been told this is something similar to a bow-tie block. But since I've never done a bow-tie block it is all new to me.

Now I have to give the credit to CraftyBear. She gave a link to a block site on youtube and on the right-hand side was another link to this "10-Minute Block". So, being curious, I had to click on it to see what it was all about. OH MY GOSH - I had a layer cake I just bought so I had to try it. I got right on it and within an hour I made 8 blocks.

You can really can make a quilt top so fast with 10 inch squares it turns your head, because a finished block is 20"x20". Check it out. I have made 4 more blocks to make a 3 block by 4 block top in Christmas fabrics, 12 blocks in all. They will make a 60x80 quilt top before sashings or borders. Need to decide if I want to add sashing or not and then it will be finished and I will post pics.

You have to check this site out.

Looks easy. I love easy, big blocks. Gotta try it! Thanks

Linda1 10-22-2010 07:24 AM

I really love that.

BellaBoo 10-22-2010 07:47 AM

This is like the one seam flying geese construction. Easy as Pie! I made the flying geese block 12" and put two together for the same look but this seems easier. Thanks for posting this.

Granny K 10-22-2010 08:33 AM

Do you have to make the block bigger then 10 inches to start?
or just 10 inches.

AnnieF 10-22-2010 08:45 AM

Aren't some people so creative....I can never think that stuff up, but am able to do the quilts once I see it. I will definitely try this out. The good thing about the technique is you can probably use any size block to start since all the 5 blocks are the same size.....no math involved. I'm going to try it having it look like a bowtie when it's finished.

angieh1964 10-22-2010 08:50 AM

i am sooo ordering this book!

Dollysquiltingmom 10-22-2010 08:57 AM

Thanks for the info. Will have to try that.

Yes, as long as all 5 squares are the same size, it will work.

jeanequilts 10-22-2010 09:36 AM

What a great concept!

Very cool indeed! I was thinking of making up a wall quilt for my parents for xmas and that would be a quick one - thanks for sharing!

BellaBoo 10-22-2010 10:20 AM

Yep, the book seems to be a good one to have on hand. I don't mind buying a book or pattern when the author shares the how tos for free. That to me deserves a book sale.

grapesky 10-22-2010 10:59 AM

love it - thanks for sharing!

susanne 10-22-2010 10:59 AM

Love the effect since a new beginner. Would like to have a paper copy of directions-any one know where I can get a free pattern?

bluadept 10-22-2010 12:07 PM

Is there a way you could make the center larger and the around blocks smaller and still end up with the same design and size?

zennia 10-22-2010 01:05 PM

Unreal. I love it. Some people are so creative. Going to try this for sure.

Patched 10-22-2010 02:00 PM

Interesting question. I don't know the answer but would be interested in knowing the answer. Maybe I'll get a chance to try it tomorrow.

Ok, I just tried it. I had 10 minutes. And it worked. I used 6" squares which made a smaller total block, but I liked it. And yes I think you can make a larger center. If you make 10" squares maybe try something like a 12" block and just work up. Or you can cut the backround colors down, and use that fabric to make a log cabin quilt. But very easy to do. You don't need to be advanced. Thanks for finding that!!!

thanks, that looks a lot easier than the blocks that look like that. I am still sort of a beginner. Only done 12 projects so far but at least they are completed and another dozen planned and put together as kits so I don't loose them with my stash from regular sewing.

craftybear 10-22-2010 06:05 PM

great job, thanks for showing us the picture of your block

No free patterns for this one. The book is not expensive. ;-)

I started one tonight too! It's so simple. But you do have to be a bit careful to pull your "inside" points out or they don't sew quite right. Once, I nailed that (in second block) it just goes swimmingly :)

SaraSewing 10-22-2010 07:11 PM

Pretty cool!!!

I always wonder where people come up with these cool block patterns! This is so awesome! I've bookmarked and will be doing this soon!! Thank you for sharing!!
