jcrilley - that is a good idea to pin the color catcher to the quilt. Thanks.

I also purchase the color grabbers at Walmart. The Carbona work equally fine and are a buck cheaper. It's a bargain because it works!

Color catchers can be made at home with washing soda. There is a thread on here somewhere telling us how to do that. You make a solution of washing soda and water. Soak fabric squares (old wash cloths, towel pieces, rags) in that solution, then hang them to dry. Use them just like the color catchers from the store. Maybe someone can find the link to those directions.

The Carbona brand has been around since my Grandmother's day. I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

The original Color Catchers were by Carbona, made with special terry cloth like fabric. They were sold in quilt shops and Hancock's Fabrics. Any 100% non treated cotton fabric can be used for a color catcher but it is expensive.

I now put my CC's in lingerie bags.

I've seen a DIY color catchers recipe online somewhere. If you google it it should be easy to find.

I use a 'wide mesh' washing bag not the finer mesh one...works great and //so far// no color catchers have escaped down the drain.

I recently washed a large quilt at the laundry-mat and put 4 color catchers in the wash. I was very worried that the colors would run. They didn't and the color catchers disappeared. I don't know what happened to them and neither did the attendant. I wanted to see if they had any color on them. Strange, huh.

Probably down the drain. I have a front loader and I used color catchers twice and then I heard about them clogging drains. Well, the next weekend I went to do laundry and yep, you guessed it, my drain was clogged in the pump. Thank goodness it was under warranty and I watched him do it so the next time it happended with a glove from my little granddaugter, I knew how to fix it. If you use them, pin them to a wash cloth or something similar so they don't go down the drain. I know even when I had a top loader I had to watch little socks getting sloshed over the side of the washer into the drainage system. Its not just front loaders.
