Designing a Quilt with GIMP - Free Software

2 Attachment(s)
Good Afternoon,

I have used a free program called GIMP for many years to edit photos. It's a lot like Photoshop, however I recently discovered I could use it to design quilts, and also use the fabric swatches from the manufacturer's site to test my quilt layout.

I thought I would create a tutorial to help others who might be interested in doing this, but didn't want to spend the money on Quilt Design Software.

Anyway please feel free to try this out and see if my instruction make sense. :) And also let me know any changes, errors or instructions that might be unclear.

ENJOY!

I don't have a mac, but it appears that GIMP is also on the MAC OS X platform.

It's located here: http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/

I don't know if the instructions will differ greatly or be the same. If you want to try and let me know that would be great! ;)

Wooohoooo....thanks so much for taking the time to do this for us!

Very good tutorial. Thanks, Michael. I've been using Gimp for a
while but your tutorial will sure help improve my Gimp skills. Like you said
it's free so what more do we want? I can't use EQ programs since I use
Linux so I'm pretty much stuck with Gimp. I might have more questions for
you later. So far so good. :D

Well I didn't get too far since I'm computer challenged.
DS is coming for vacation in a couple weeks so I've bookmarked this site - just know he'll want something to do!! LOL

Hey Michael, I did it. :-D  (doing a happy dance here)
Finally, now I know how to import fabric into Gimp.
It's a little different in Linux but we figured it out. Thanks again.

WOOHOO! Look at you! :) Now that you have that down, keep in mind if you play around with all of the different graph papers, I think you possibilities are end less. :P

Thank you very much

lizzyq 07-30-2011 05:15 AM

This is so great, and you are wonderful to share your discovery with us! Combining fabric color and scale is something I have trouble with, and with your tutorial, my quilts will be much improved with no disappointing surprises at the finish. Thank you!

quilter41 07-30-2011 05:28 AM

Veery good and very helpful Thanks so much. I think EQ is a pain to learn. LOL!

Dodee 07-30-2011 05:35 AM

Shhh - don't tell anyone, but I don't have the faintest idea what GIMP is.

PamB8s 07-30-2011 05:48 AM

Very nice Michael. Looking forward to working with this.

sankay 07-30-2011 05:51 AM

Thank You so much, now I have to learn how to use it.

Olivia 07-30-2011 05:55 AM

Thank you so very much. I have the $$$software, but it is confusing to me and no dealer near by. Will give this a try this weekend. Thanks again. Olivia

vivoaks 07-30-2011 06:34 AM

Thank you SOOOOOO much!! I downloaded GIMP a few days ago because of talk on this site, and tried to play with it a bit. I was totally lost! I just downloaded your pdf, so now I just need to take some time to read through it and see if I can figure it out. (I'm a visual learner, and can do things in no time if I see someone show me - just reading it and trying it myself doesn't always work so well.)

vivoaks 07-30-2011 06:37 AM

Go to http://www.gimp.org - it's free software to download that is similar to photo shop.

Thanks for your sharing. I am really excited to try the software. I have looked into the expensive software but was too cheap to get it. That is a great tutorial to use.

Dodee 07-30-2011 11:38 AM

Will someone please tell me what the letters GIMP stand for?
Thanks a bunch.
