To avoid the starch white powder, spray and press on the back side of the fabric.

I admit to not being a starch user but I have Niagra and Best Press. I can never tell a difference with the Best Press even with letting it soak in. I can tell a difference in the fabric with the Niagra, but, it doesn't seem to make a difference in the outcome of my projects. I'm working on precision. I know Leah Day starches her fabric til it is stiff as a board. I bought some of her 5" squares and yup, they could almost stand up by themselves. Of course I will buy the new version, because, why not, and maybe it will make a difference.

Do ya’ll starch as you go, e.g. cutting time, or do you wash yardage and starch before folding and storing?
|
I found cans of real starch at Walmart on the aisle where the ironing boards are sold. The cans in the laundry section were sizing and such. The real starch is in a much smaller can and twice the price of what it use to be just a few months ago. I hit the dollar store and found real starch on the back of the shelf. I starch my fabric stiff as a board too before cutting. For bias cuts I use Teral spray before cutting. I have used the new Acorn spray and it's very good.

I just use liquid starch and water. What does the vodka do?

I've always used the liquid and just put it in my own spray bottles, I dilute it a bit as it is more concentrated than the Spray cans. Just test to find the right ratio for your purposes.

When cuts are bias and precision is key, I use Terial magic stabilizing fabric spray. Terial is more economical then using heavy amounts of starch for the stiffness per spray.

I use the home-made stuff using Vodka. I make it up in a gallon jug and keep it in my fridge down in my sewing room. I like to dunk my yardage into the starch mixture,
