Thanks....a good tip I think....use a gallon size zip lock bag and cut it to use along with the fabric lining...makes it usable for snacks..easy to wipe out and nice also if using for cosmetics
I have made over 50 of them so far and all have loved them

Are you cyber-stalking me?!Lol. I spent an time last night and this morning looking for a tutorial for these bags. You have wonderful timing! Thanks

Hi! Just wondering, your instructions say to insert the tape measure to the right side. Do the numbers face the outside or the inside of the bag?? I actually made one and can't figure which way they work better.

i'm making one right now, the numbers face the outside of the bag, as your looking at it, i'm covering the whole piece of the tape with a couple layers of clear duct tape to make it stronger, i've read where the tape will break if you open and close it alot. what do you all think? am i right about the facing of the tape, i sure hope so.!!!!

According to this tute the numbers DO face the outside of the bag so you're right. :D

chartwig 10-25-2010 11:55 AM

Thanks for clarifying that. I wasn't sure which side was the right side.

zennia 10-25-2010 12:54 PM

How cute. My husband buys those tape measures every time he goes to $$ store. Going to borrow one and try this.

CarrieAnne 10-25-2010 06:04 PM

Cute!

Thanks Sue!

Just want to add a little note about which side of the ruler goes in and which side out. Believe it or not my girlfriend made hers and put the numbers on the inside and it didn't work. It turned out that she had a tape measure with the numbers on the outside of the concave - I saw it with my own eyes - had to - LOL - thought she just didn't understand. I wish I had taken a picture of her tape measure next to mine - one with numbers on one side and one with numbers on the opposide side of the convave. So maybe we better say to have the outside of the concave facing the outside of the purse and the hollow side of the concave facing the inside just in case someone else gets hold of a tape measure like she has.

These are wonderful. I think I'l make a bunch for friends

Thanks for the link

Here are pictures of the 2 I made. The Christmas one has a cord for the handle & the pink one has one of left over binding. Next I'm going to try making one larger

HOW CUTE!!

Electrical tape works well, because there is more flexibility.

The only electrical tape I'm familiar with is the black flexible kind that you wrap around wires. What kind is this?

eimay 10-29-2010 06:29 AM

Mimiknoxtaylor,
Yes, that is the tape I am referring to.

mimiknoxtaylor 10-29-2010 09:08 AM

How would the flexible black electrial tape make the bag snap shut? That's what the tape measure does (you use the metal, retractable kind)

the electrial tape is used to cover the measuring tape. to keep it from cutting into the fabric, and i think to make it stronger too, but i use the clear duct tape , to me its less sticky to use.

eimay 10-29-2010 03:53 PM

I only cover the ends of the tape measure where it was cut.

Miss Patsy Jane 10-30-2010 09:13 AM

I've never heard of cleaar duct tape, where do you find it?

nursie76 10-30-2010 09:18 AM

Yes, I actually purchased the pattern earlier (drats!) it says that the numbers face the inside of the bag...the hollow side. So I think that would be the way PghPat said. But that doesn't make sense to me, the tute looks like the hollow part faces out....haven't made one yet, guess I need to so I can figure this out. :|

by mistake i put the tape in wrong and it didn't work right, so the numbers , in the concave, face you when the bag is done,

what i have is made by Scotch, and i think my husband either got it at Home Depot or Lowes, i swiped it from his repair stuff, oh, the tape measure , tape keeps going back into the holder, so now i guess i'll have to get hubby to take it apart, he already got it out once, the lock on it doesn't work good on some of the cheap tapes.!!!!!

Miss Patsy Jane 10-30-2010 11:15 AM

Thanks! I sometimes go to Lowe's and Home Depot with my husband, there are all kinds of interesting things there, but he is not a looker...he gets what he is going after and then he's ready to go! Maybe I'll have to go alone sometimes!

Hi I have not made one yet but cant quite grasp how the tape works. if you put the pieces of tape in with the numbers facing the outside then how do the keep the opening closed as the curves of the rulars are different next to each other so how do they cling together to keep the top closed.

My printed instructions :
Cut 2 pieces of metal measuring tape One inch shorter than the width of the finished bag. Round off the sharp corners & cover with tape (duct, electrical, even painters tape).(to keep it from poking through the fabric. -I've also used double the measuring tape for larger bags.
When you get ready to insert the measuring tape into the casing Make sure the numbers face the outside (pretty side) of the bag. If you don't put the tape in right you won't get the snap that closes the bag. Put a piece of the measuring tape in both ends of the bag.
Make sure the tape is 1/2" shorter than the bag on each end so that you don't sew over it when sewing the side.

margaret59 08-02-2011 02:15 PM

hi if you put each piece of tape with the number facing the outside then they will be back to back and not work. Do you mean that the two pieces of tape should both face the same way.

I did it just the way the instructions said & I only have a small one here-gave the rest away. I can feel it through the fabric & YES the numbers (on the concave side or curved in side) both face outward. Mine works. The sides with no numbers wind up back to back.

nursie76 08-02-2011 03:51 PM

My problem was that I managed to get a metal tape measure with numbers on both sides
