Has anyone made these?

http://www.make-stuff.com/projects/quiltball.html

I found this person selling them for $20+. Check out her website.
http://www.theornamentgirl.com/tradi...-ornaments.htm
I've seen them sold at craft fairs for about $10. Can't believe she's getting what she is getting for them.
Was thinking I could make some of them for this craft fair I have coming up.

**edit**
I was just reading on her website....she's saying

The Ornament GirlŪ is a registered trademark with the federal government. Content on this website is protected by copyright, trademark and intellectual property laws. Absolutely nothing on this site, including photos, designs, text, graphics, or descriptions and names of ornaments, may be copied, reproduced, or redistributed in any way without my explicit written consent.

Are we to assume that she is saying SHE has the copyright on the ornaments? I don't see how that can be. Maybe the copyright on the fabric colors, but I still don't see how she can do that.

reneebobby 09-02-2008 03:29 AM

I've never made them Terri but I have seen them and they are really nice. Good luck if you make them and post pics too.

tlrnhi 09-02-2008 03:35 AM

you wanna help?

reneebobby 09-02-2008 03:40 AM

Wish I could but I have so much to do and no time to do it. lol I think i need to clone myself so I can work at work and sew at home all at the same time.

tlrnhi 09-02-2008 03:45 AM

same here. I have so much to do, I don't know where I'm going to find the time. I don't work outside the home, so that's a good thing...well, sometimes it is.

reneebobby 09-02-2008 03:46 AM

Exactly, Oh well, what are we to do.

Terri,

I believe that means that she has copyrighted the name of her website.....it is her tradmark.......that is all......I may be wrong...........ohhh Patriceeeeeeeeee.... :D

tlrnhi 09-02-2008 04:31 AM

On her thingy, it says that nothing on her website can be copied or reproduced. I'm taking it to mean that she's THINKING she has the trademark/copyright on the pattern? I don't think so!
So, if I'm reading it correctly, she is saying that you CANNOT make the ornaments, but then again, she could be saying you CANNOT use the same fabric and make a ball that looks like hers.
I'm thinking she needs to check around the internet because I have seen MANY that look like hers, with charms, glitter and all.

Dorothy of Kansas 09-02-2008 04:41 AM

Terri, I made these over 5 years ago and they are very easy and very pretty when completed. I can't believe she's selling them for so much though! They are a lot of fun to make...I used short half inch pins to hold the fabric to the styrofoam. You can make them in any size that you can get the stryofoam balls in, just add more rows of fabric. Hope this helps. Let me know if you get stuck, but the directions were very clear.

tlrnhi 09-02-2008 04:44 AM

I'm going to have to make a trip to Ben Franklins to see if they have the styrofoam balls, so won't start them til maybe next week.

retrogirl02 09-02-2008 04:48 AM

OOooh, cool pattern. Thanks for the links...not that I have any time to create Christmas presents but i may have to start a new tradition for my mom. One of those a year should keep her happy for a while until I finally get to make a quilt for her, that is. She's giving me a double wedding ring this Christmas (fingers crossed) and I know she's put tons of hours into it.

As far as this lady saying that you can't reproduce her ornaments, that's just nutty. I could take a pattern, make some and put up a warning, too but it's meaningless if you can prove that you got them elsewhere (like the site with the directions on it LOL). You're good to go, although I don't know anyone around here willing to pay 30 freaking dollars for one little ball. I'm with you, 10-15 in my neighborhood would be reasonable. The best part is that you'll use very little fabric. I already have a gameplan green & gold for mom, she'd like that and has commented on the 2 fabics I'm talking about before.

I agree with you. That pattern has been around for a long time and it is not her design completely. I think she should check on your copyright laws a little more.

Terri there was a pattern for this ornament somewhere else on this forum.. I can't remember where now, but its here somewhere. I made the egg ornaments like this a few years ago and gave them as gifts. They were a real hit. hmmmm I wonder if I should try them again???

tlrnhi 09-02-2008 05:20 AM

I"m going to give them a go.
WOn't be until next week tho.
I want to get a few lap quilts done this week. Well, the tops, that is, then work on a few totes.
I'm thinking doll quilts too, but not sure how those would go over.
I need to get going on table runners too.

mary quite contrary 09-02-2008 05:41 AM

I made these ornaments at least 25 years ago. They were lots of fun.

I want to see pictures. :)

retrogirl02 09-02-2008 05:48 AM

OMG had to laugh when I took a closer look at her site....the children's section has licensed fabrics on each one. UM, I think a copyright infringement on it's own right there unless of course she's paying the companies :hunf: which looks a little doubtful.

zyxquilts 09-02-2008 07:06 AM

It could be that her copyright is for her PHOTOGRAPHS, etc. I've seen many sites that don't want you to use their pictures - I think Karla has something like that on her site even.
You can copyright a written pattern, but I don't think you can stop someone from creating their own pattern or using a 'free' one to make a similar item.
Does that make sense?

tlrnhi 09-02-2008 07:24 AM

I understand about the photos, but she has included pretty much everything.

beachlady 09-02-2008 07:54 AM

Terri, someone on here posted those just recently and I believe it took me to a differnet web site than you posted. I will see if I can find it again.

FOUND IT! But don't know how to post page link here - It is under links and resources August 12, 2008 posted by thecalicocottage. It does take you to the same link you posted, but do look at the two she made - much nicer looking - at least I think so.

I agree... she could get her butt whooped if she is not careful!

http://www.myhandmadecreations.com/q...ornaments.html

This lady is charging 26 dollars for each one. Hmm....I seem to have a sudden urge to pick up some styrofoam balls at the hobby lobby....LOL

QuiltinLee 09-02-2008 08:50 AM

Checking that site over, Terry, it seems that only her name and pictures are registered.

Basically, you could the pattern that you posted and even make the ornaments in similar materials and colors. There is no TM infringement there that I can see. Basically, if you're making Christmas ornaments in red, green and white, how can anyone say that is an infringement. Those are traditional colors.

However, if you got the EXACT materials and used them in the same fashion, then she might have something to stand on.

But as the pattern is a "free" pattern, she does not have a copyright on that pattern and you are able to use it?

Is that any clearer?

burnsk 09-02-2008 09:18 AM

We used to make these ornaments years and years ago in girl scouts. Won't tell you how old I am, but believe me, it's been a long time. We used fabric or wide ribbon to make them (remember when ribbon was a stiff-like fabric on the bolt and you bought it by the yard). Some were round and some were egg shaped. Used to get that real wide ribbon at Frank's Nursery (may they rest in peace - I sure do miss that store). As a matter of fact, I just found an old bag of that ribbon, in a Frank's bag, in a box of old stuff in my garage and I couldn't remember what it was for. Thanks for the reminder.

That pattern is also very similar to the star hot-pad that my granny used to make. I'll try to post a picture later of the first hot-pad I made with her using that pattern. First I've got to find it. I was so proud of it that I wouldn't let anyone use it, ever. AND I still have it.

I checked out that website and I'm pretty sure that shes just referring to not copying any part of the site itself for personal use. It amazes me that she's getting the $ she is for her oraments. Her ornaments are nice but we all know how much they cost to make. WOW - I've been in the wrong profession all these years. Guess now that I've retired I should think about supplementing my meager income and make ornaments.

retrogirl02 09-02-2008 09:18 AM

this one is half the price & has exposed pins...they look pretty on screen

http://cgi.ebay.com/3-Unique-Handmad...ayphotohosting

woooh that's one long addy. I hope you can click right to it.

retrogirl02 09-02-2008 09:22 AM

burnsk---I'm with you. A little holiday cash is on the way! I had to laugh when you talked about the hot pads----mom wouldn't teach me to sew unless I made a ton of hot pads for her first. Needless to say, it took me a very long time to learn on my own (she does give me lessons when we see each other LOL)...I remember those pads oh so well. As far as franks goes, I'm still living with my ribbon stash from the time they closed. I think I got everything 75% off the sale price. We had a cart full of ribbon and my poor DH just smiled and shook his head....he had to wonder what in the world I'd do with all of it but didn't complain once

retrogirl02 09-02-2008 09:24 AM

tlrnhi----thanks so much for posting!! What a great idea for the holidays.

burnsk 09-02-2008 09:37 AM

Checked out that address - loved the name of her store "Artsyfartsy". Who ever it is they definitely have a sense of humor. I wonder if they quilt? LOL

MAXIES2 09-02-2008 01:29 PM

I too made these years ago from a pattern I got here in England, I sold quite a few for about $10 about 15 years ago. You will enjoy making them, I have one I kept which has the date on 1990 which I did in x stitch on aida with xmas coloured leaves etc for the centre, it comes out every year to put on my tree.

I really likes these ornaments....I might have to try the pattern one day!

Hugs!

desertdebbe 09-02-2008 06:30 PM

Here is a picture of 3 of the many I made last year. You'll need a LOT of pins and your fingers will get sore pushing them in. The more you make you'll learn how to really get the look that you like.

I remember making them in that time too - they were in lots of craft books, so I think someone "may" have beat her to any rights. I am sure the copyright she is referring to is covering her name and website.

I've been seeing more and more of these bogus copyright notices on things from the 70s and 80s.

Quilting Aggi 09-03-2008 04:25 AM

That's surely what it must be Moonpi.... she definetely doesn't have the full copyright rights on the pattern itself! her website says she is only 30 or 31, that pattern has been around longer than she was a twinkle in her mother's eye!

tlrnhi 09-03-2008 04:32 AM

The way it's worded, she is saying it's all hers.
But then again,,,,I could have read more into it.

I still think it's rediculous the prices she is asking.
THink I should make some and charge the same thing? I bet they'll stay on the table if I do. lol

KellyPA 09-03-2008 05:09 AM

Here is another website that sells them http://www.hubbardsbasketcupboard.com/OtherItems.html

I have decided to go out and get some balls so I can make a few today. I will post pictures when I'm done!

Wow she is selling them for $20 too.... I wonder how she is doing with them? The first girl we talked of and her copyright issues seems to be doing very well and not able to keep up with the demand (thats if that is true, and she is doing other things) but I find it hard to believe people would buy them for that much!!!

Alaskan lady 09-03-2008 05:19 AM

Yes!!! In 1988 - My daughter(then 10) and I took an evening class at our local quilt shop and made these ornaments......with ribbons and all. You will be OK making them...go for it!

KellyPA 09-03-2008 05:25 AM

These are my humble opinions on the price of these.....

Sometimes we forget that not everyone can do what we do. My neighbor has purchased some pretty, but very easy to make ornaments at crafts for a good amount of money and when I asked her if she wanted me to teach her how to make the ornaments she said, she didn't want to learn and she would rather pay for them. So even though we would never pay $20 for these, doesn't mean that there aren't many out there that will. I'm willing to bet if you use the right fabrics, someone, even at a craft show will spend $20 on it. In fact I have spent years trying to find something I could make that would be inexpensive and easy to make and would sell for a good price....I think these women have finally found it! How often do we invest 10 hours into a project only have to someone say that will give us $25 for it. Crafting is a hard business. People want amazing hand-made things, but a fair price. These ornaments, however, look amazing and they look very time consuming. I would be interested to see how long they take to make. In the end $20 may end up being a fair price. Like everything something is worth only what someone will pay for it! So if they get buyers at $20, good for them! Hope you have a great craft show!!!! I'm sure we all want to hear what you charge for them and how many you sell! I wish you all the best!!!!!

Hugs!

Kelly you make some very valid points there.. You are right... to us it seems alot, but to many who don't do what we do they don't mind spending the $20 for a beautiful ornament.
I guess those of us that quilt and craft go to these fairs (I am a culprit of this) see something, look at the price and go OMG they are charging HOW much for this!! geez I can make this for cheaper!!!
Kelly you are very right.

KellyPA 09-03-2008 10:49 AM

I just made one of these. It's not completely finished because the ribbon I purchased isn't wide enough to cover the pins. The ball cost about $1, the pins were $2.85 (you need almost the entire box for one)....so the total so far is about $4, I used fabric I had here and I still need to get some ribbon, so we will round it to about $5 or $6 to make each ornament including fabric. It took me a hour and a half, so if I sold it for $20, I would make about $9.30 an hour after supplies. Minimum wage is $6.55 per hour in the US, so I think $9.30 for a handmade item isn't bad for someone to pay who can't make it for themselves. So if you sold them for $10, you would make $2.65 an hour. And for $15, you would make $6 an hour. Now, of course, these are all estimates....someone who is experienced could probably make these faster, there is also probably a cheaper place than AC Moore to get supplies. It was fun to make and I'm hoping to make a few more!

Hugs!

Knot Sew 09-03-2008 11:39 AM

I read further and she said her mom showed her how to make these over 15 years ago from a very old pattern and she embelishes them so each is unique..................... So probably means exact copy or web site

Susan F 09-03-2008 03:42 PM

Those have been around for years, I know I have made them before at least 5 to 10 years ago. If you use an egg shaped styrofoam and work fromone end they look like pinecones.
