Have you seen the 'new' Singer?

http://www.joann.com/singer-160th-an...en=16097015874

Singer has a new machine going to be available at Jo-Ann's. Resembles the style of a Featherweight.

Prism99 02-23-2012 02:07 PM

To be quite honest, it doesn't look anything like a vintage featherweight to me! I really don't like its looks, and Singer plastic machines do not have a good reputation. This one is really easy for me to pass up.....

Baysidegal 02-23-2012 02:13 PM

It's unique. I will have to stop in to see it. I just picked up a Singer Red Eye that is in beautiful shape and only $50. Thats more my price range lol!

lfw045 02-23-2012 02:20 PM

I just came from Joann's and it's not there yet.

redkimba 02-23-2012 02:26 PM

That's pretty cool, (out of my price range), but pretty cool!

J Miller 02-23-2012 02:31 PM

All I've seen is pictures of the machine. The part I'm not comfortable with is the small work area under the arch. There's really no room to do anything with that machine.

It's pretty, but on the shelf to look at pretty.

That's the same one that was demo-d on HSN. You can probably read up on it on their website too.

clsurz 02-23-2012 03:38 PM

That's the same one HSN had couple weeks ago.

I have the FW75 and love it because it is computerized, can be taken anywhere and despite what many say about these machines with plastic outside everything inside is metal and heavy enough but not to heavy not to be able to carry it.

I've had the FW75 for almost a year and it is a workhorse.

This one is also a FW computerized but a special edition and made to look like an older model with the exception that is computerized with alot of stitch options.

Folks that want a heavy duty ONE STITCH machine it's their choice to do so but in today's technology age folks want a whole lot more than a straight stitch machine no matter what it's made off.

Candela59 02-23-2012 03:45 PM

I bought one from HSN earlier this month when they were having a special. I got extra attachments, a gorgeous carry bag and a wonderful book called "Sew Retro". I've made a few small items already and I really love her!!! :)

I just checked it out on Joann's website. The machine w/o all the extras I got at HSN is $120 more than I paid for everything at HSN! I feel even better about my purchase now! :)

leatheflea 02-24-2012 03:46 AM

Well I think its a cute idea! I think if I had vintage decor in my sewing room it would be a nice addition to keep with the vintage feel.

SunlitenSmiles 02-24-2012 04:13 AM

does it have needle up/ needle down?
does it have a knee lift bar for the presser foot?

these are a couple of favorite things with my 20 yr. old/young (but heavy)BERNINA

do not understand the fashionation with auto needle threading, it is so easy to thread so the only time i ever used the threader was in the 'how to use your machine' class when first purchased.

LOL, because as you get older, the needle hole gets smaller. I'm considering getting a new machine for that feature alone.

DonnaC 02-24-2012 09:28 AM

Actually, there are quite a few of us on the Board who own that new machine (most purchased from HSN). Just search for "Singer 160" and you'll find lots of info. I have made one project on mine thus far, and I really like the machine. I'll have to post a review here for everyone!

AUQuilter 02-24-2012 09:46 AM

It is always fun to see what new things come out- whether I like them or not. It does resemble the Featherweight although I love the simple but sharp lines of the old metal machines. The marketplace determines the success of these products.
Thanks for posting this.

No it doesn't have the needle up/down option something I really am missing. I figure I'll just have to get use to it. I really, really like it though. I've never knee lifter option so I don't really miss that! LOL! :)

I have to agree with automatic threader. It takes longer to use that dumb thing than doing it myself. I never use mine and I have it on all my machines.

Walkng into JoAnns last week end with my sewing buddie. She said to me. You have to come and look at the new Singer. I saw. We both bought one. We love it. We are so bad. Now to tell my wonderful DH :-) he bought me another sewing machine.

beadywoman 02-25-2012 06:15 AM

I bought one (or rather, my husband bought it for me!) from HSN while my beloved Janome was in the hospital. I really do like the machine - it is MUCH heavier than you would think, actually heavier than my Janome. I do miss the needle down function, though, and haven't been able to successfully operate the needle threader yet (yes, I DO use that when able, cuz I have trouble finding the hole!). I've done some paper piecing on the Singer, as well as some regular piecing. It does a good job, has a nice straight stitch, but I don't like the 1/4 foot that came with the machine, so will be looking to upgrade that soon.

Do I like it better than my Janome? In terms of performance, no. But in terms of unusual looks, oh yes. It is very pretty! Makes me want to get a vintage machine!

CRELLA 02-25-2012 06:24 AM

I have it an it sews really good the only thing is that if you are sewing with blk. Thread it's hard to see but ireally like it. Singer 160

CRELLA 02-25-2012 06:26 AM

I got it from hsn for 499.00

annasgirl 02-25-2012 06:35 AM

Oh my, I do believe I'm in love! I just bought a Singer Confidence Quilter and I love it....but maybe I'll give that to my DD and buy this one for me!!!!

Wintersewer 02-25-2012 08:10 AM

Well, I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. And for the price it doesn't seem to have many features...apparently no needle up/down or speed control....and not many stitches either. To each their own. JMHO

Gotta say I've been using my new Singer 160 everyday and I just love her and she's soooo pretty too! :)

Looks like a Yugo.

sewbizgirl 02-25-2012 03:31 PM

I'd rather buy two real featherweights for that price!

vivoaks 02-25-2012 07:28 PM

Wow! Is that ugly!! And $499? Waaay to much!!

lynnegreen 02-25-2012 07:31 PM

I saw the Singer 160 for the first time yesterday at my local JoAnne's. I thought it was a bit "plastic" looking. Unfortunately, no one was available to answer questions about it.

Wintersewer 02-26-2012 07:11 AM

I agree!! And for slightly more ($418) folks could buy a Brother PC 420 with 294 stitches, alphabet, speed control, needle up/down, knee lifter, auto thread cutter, memory, hard case and is rated 5 stars after several years of sales. I can't understand buying that Singer.....?????........ Shows what advertising hype will do!! IMHO, anyway.

Why all the venomous negativity about this machine? I just don't get it. Whatever happen to just being polite or the old adage if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all? Obviously there are a few of us idiots who actually liked this machine and even went so far as to purchase it. If you don't like it why not just say "congrats on your new machine and I hope you enjoy it!"??? Is your negative opinion so important to you that you feel you need to express it so bluntly? Honestly....I'm just confused.

I bought this machine. I paid MY money for it not yours. I happen to really like the machine. I like the look and the performance. Why not be happy for me and the others....??? And that is just MHO.

Could not agree with you more!!!!! I feel the same about when the cheapy Brothers are bashed (and my guess is by some who have never used one!) Many of us are so happy with them and we still read on here about the expensive machines having problems and no dealer support, etc. We are all entitled to our opinions and choice of machines and you're right - we should all be happy for each other.

How funny! I also own a very, very cheap Brother that has served me very well! LOL! I just love that little machine and it has taken quite a bit of punishment and still kept going. :)

I couldn't agree with you More! Well said! I too have a "cheapy" Brother and found that I can free-motion quilt on it much better than on my expensive Janome. AND I love the Singer. To each his own, but as Grandma used to say and has already been sited here, "If you can't say anything nice, say nothing at all!" Seems that quilting/sewing snobbery is alive and well here.

ladypetite 03-24-2012 05:39 AM

I purchased mine from HSN also on their first release day. I think this machine is quite lovely and I love all of the extras HSN buyers received with it. Shame on me but I haven't used her yet. I am a new quilter and am still learning to sew on the new Brother I purchased last October....but just couldn't pass up the deal on HSN for Singer 160.

Ladies.....here is a "cheapy" machine story for you. I am a new beginner quilter. Years ago I sewed clothing for my children (circa 1972-1977) on my Sears Kenmore Model 1217.....truely a workhorse. So when my "quiltaholic" sister finall convinced me last year to take up quilting now that I have retired, I did. She has been doing this for years and has 2 awesome very expensive Janome machines (real beauties), a professional 'huge' embroidery machine and a very nice Bernina she takes to classes.

I have had Rotator Cuff surgery on my right shoulder and told her that unless I got a lighter machine, I would not be able to carry my Kenmore (28+pounds or more) to classes. So we went shopping at the Brother store where I spotted one I really liked and loved the weight of (11-13 pounds)....the CS-6000i. She did not like it and actually succeeded talking me out of it, so I left empty handed. She continued on to classes and such with her heavy Bernina or one of her Janomes......but I stayed home. Then one day I decided what the heck....I wanted a lighter weight machine and went down there and bought it. I LOVE IT!!! She did congratulate me on it and we signed up together for the next class that came our way. The second week of class, she went to the Brother store and purchased her own lightweight Brother machine......a couple of upgrades from mine, but still lighter than her others. Now, unless she 'needs' her heavy Janome or Benina Embroidery machine for classes, she brings her new Brother. I love my Kenmore for tough jobs, my Brother to learn with and I am very happy that I purchased my Singer 160 from HSN. I do believe we will be sharing many days of sewing fun together.
