I swore I'd never Paper Piece again, but this is incredible!

I've tried many times to PP, with terrible results. Just can't wrap my head around it. I stumbled on a Craftsy class called Quick Strip Paper Piecing by Peggy Martin and, with great skepticism, watched the intro and read the comments.
This method actually made sense to me, so I threw caution to the wind and signed up (on sale)...added to the fact that there is a section on New York Beauty and I've always wanted to try one.
Well....this woman is a genius! And a great teacher. So, if you're looking for an easy way to paper piece, give this a try.
Here's my first project....

Super beautiful !!!! I hate paper piecing with a capital H :) I have every book Carol Doak authored, took a class with her, and know her personally so I was especially disappointed when I realized I don't like to PP. But maybe I'll revisit it!
You did a great job!!!

Barb in Louisiana 07-21-2017 10:24 AM

Very Very nice! I love the fabrics you chose.

patsan 07-21-2017 10:56 AM

Wow! That's fantastic!

Stitchnripper 07-21-2017 11:12 AM

Really nice. I took a Judy Niemeyer class and it seemed hard to me. Took a Carol Doak class and really liked it.

bearisgray 07-21-2017 11:49 AM

Beautiful selection of fabrics for that medallion!

Kassaundra 07-21-2017 11:53 AM

Great job, there is always more then one way to skin that cat, glad you found one you like

QuiltnNan 07-21-2017 12:06 PM

thanks for the heads up and your block is super

Sandra in Minnesota 07-21-2017 02:33 PM

Great fabric choice. Those points are perfect!

anne2016 07-21-2017 02:39 PM

Watson...lovely block.
You have piqued my curiosity. I always wanted to learn PP but the few tries I made were disappointing.
I am interested in the class. Is there closed captioning available with it? The preview does not have it.

Watson 07-21-2017 02:52 PM

anne2016...yes, there is!

Oh, your block is beautiful. I have never been able to wrap my head around paper piecing. It all seems so backwards to me. I've practiced a few times & have managed to make a few blocks that look pretty good but did not feel like all the time & struggle I had with making them was really worth it in the long run. Plus the fact that many times my fabric was short & I had to rip out & use a larger piece. Ugh! I will think about this class & may try it out to see if her method makes more sense to me. Thanks for sharing your accomplishment.

zozee 07-21-2017 05:27 PM

Beautiful block and fabrics. I've never stuck with paper piecing long enough to say whether I like it. The results I've seen have been rewarding, but I just need to do more. Thanks for the resource. Sometimes my brain just needs a certain teacher to help connect the dots, as it were.

cashs_mom 07-21-2017 07:58 PM

Great block, Watson. I love to paper piece. I learned in a class at a LQS here. I do have to think about it and get my mind around what I think of as backwards piecing when I haven't done it in a while. But once I get into it, I really enjoy it.

Tartan 07-22-2017 04:56 AM

Pretty blocks! I actually prefer the freezer paper method where you fold the paper back and sew along the edge. No paper to remove later and you can reuse the pattern a couple of times.

elliot 07-22-2017 05:22 AM

That is the course I took to teach me pp.. I love it!

Wanabee Quiltin 07-22-2017 05:27 AM

Your block is beautiful. I have tried PP twice and it just seems so awkward to me. I would like to learn it though.

Thanks for posting. I sent you a message from my e-mail adress. I just bought the class. Can't wait to try it!
BTW...does Craftsy have any free classes? If it does, how do I access them? Thank you.

shasta5718 07-22-2017 06:38 AM

You have done a beautiful job. I am taking that class and love it. So far I have done 3 tops and am working on the others. It is a class well worth taking.

sewnclog 07-22-2017 06:44 AM

It's gorgeous and I LOVE the colors.

carolynjo 07-22-2017 06:54 AM

I can't do PP as I am left-handed and somewhat dyslexic. I have tried many, many times, but no go.

red-warrior 07-22-2017 07:09 AM

Thanks for the info , I have wanted to take a good paper piecing class and I loved yours!

rvsfan 07-22-2017 07:47 AM

I also hate PP. Always have areas not covered. Hate it. But, after reading your post and seeing your beautiful project, I'm going to watch for the class on sale. Thanks for the class recommendation.

JanieH 07-22-2017 10:48 AM

Gorgeous! Your paper piecing and choice of fabric are wonderful.

Becky's Crafts 07-22-2017 11:17 AM

Very lovely block!!

Crispy_Frog 07-22-2017 12:31 PM

I bought a Carol Doak book and DVD and don't have the courage to PP. It didn't feel logical. Your star is amazing. Like others I might try it again.

caspharm 07-22-2017 01:08 PM

That looks great.

meanmom 07-22-2017 01:08 PM

Your block is beautiful. I love how you fussy cut the points. I absolutely love paper piecing. I have done a lot of Carol Doaks blocks. I did all of her 50 paper pieced stars with a group on here. That is my avatar. I would love to make a Judy Niemeyer or a Jacqueline de Jonge quilt. The only Judy Niemeyer class they have had around here was during the week and I couldn't go.

Maureen NJ 07-22-2017 02:53 PM

Your block is beautiful. You did a great job. I recognize some of the fabric. Is it from a Craftsy kit or fabric you had?

coopah 07-22-2017 03:28 PM

You did a way good job. I think with most PP directions, you have to be a tad dyslexic to get it. Good to hear there's a class that helps and makes sense.! Congrats on mastering this technique.

Watson 07-22-2017 04:32 PM

Maureen NJ, that is fabric I had intended for something else that didn't work out. The print is a Jinny Beyer border, cut up.

Cactus Stitchin 07-22-2017 05:23 PM

That's what you get for swearing. Haha! Seriously, though beautiful piece and fabrics.

lynnie 07-22-2017 05:35 PM

stunning job. have a hard time pping. i'd probably do it by hand. but the precision is amazing

Boston1954 07-22-2017 05:55 PM

That's terrific Watson. I love the fabrics you picked.

ShirlR 07-22-2017 07:03 PM

Beautiful block! Wow!

NatalieF 07-23-2017 04:37 AM

Oh wow! Congrats! I've tried PP and had some very colourful words pop out of my mouth! I admire you for tackling it and succeeding so beautifully.

ube quilting 07-23-2017 05:37 PM

It is so rewarding to find a teacher or tutorial that helps you get through the tough, impossible, I can't get my head around it, phase of trying a new technique. Congratulations. This is a very pretty fussy cut compass, well done.

sJens 07-24-2017 01:42 PM

Nicely done. Glad you found a system that works for you--I love PP.

PS Stitcher 07-24-2017 08:19 PM

Wow!! I love your block! It looks amazing!!

esl teacher 07-25-2017 09:45 AM

Your piece is beautiful. Paper piecing was one of my challenges. A local quilt store was offering a Judy Niemeyer class so I signed up. The teacher was the store owner. She was very organized. After approximately 300 hours (Yes, I kept track). I finished my mariner's compass quilt. I told myself I did the paper piecing challenge and probably would not do another. My quilt is beautiful but I have not had it quilted yet. This is my first attempt to respond to a thread. I still need to learn how to send a picture. Over the last 3 years, since I began Quilting Board, I have really enjoyed reading and learning from all the responses. Now my challenge will be to respond more.
