1 Attachment(s)
Is anyone else completely hooked on the Missouri Star web site....those tutorials are just great...have done "disappearing 4 patch", disappearing 9 patch, disappearing pinwheel, exploding block...just love them...check it out...I'm doing exploding block quilt now that I want to be 90x90 when done...scraps are "disappearing" (pun) at a fast rate LOL
Yes, and I also love their daily deals.
Yes am hooked too....and there are so many other sites/tutes....just want to sew all day
on the exploding block, the points disappear (again???) when sewn together...hard for me to except but that's the block LOL
LindaR, I agree with you on the "disappearing" points but that block can't be beat for a quick donation quilt. :)

Exploding block
1 Attachment(s)
I tried this block and loved it. Told a friend to watch the video and she came up with a great idea. So I tried it. I made two identical blocks, then sewed them on all four sides right sides together. Then cut one on the diagonal (block on left). Then I did the same thing with two more blocks, but the colours were reversed (block on right).
Wow! I like yadroc. Cool
I think Jenny Doan is amazing.
I've made the big star quilt and the heart quilt. They went so fast and turned out really well. Love the tutes!

I think you need to make a second block from the very start with the red as the second block on top of the print. Cut the red and explode it. Then add tan and explode that. If you put that block on top of the original block (with the tan next to the print) and explode that, you will come up with the second block in your picture. Is that correct? You need to make a reversed color block? |
oh yes, Jennie and her tutes are fabulous for the quilting community and I'm sure her business has benefited too ... great collaboration.
I love the tutes. In fact just yesterday I watched the "spider web block" tute and had to buy the template and white charm packs. This is going to be so easy for my DH to follow and I know it will use up tons of scraps.

I believe she did the last block the same as the other 'exploding' block. Instead of layering a solid color on top, she layered another pieced block. With an exploding, after sewing 1/4" all around the outside, you only cut the diagonals thru one layer, then open it up and iron it. If you look at the very outer corners, if folded in, they would form the flower center.

If you want the one on the right, you have to make the bottom block as the one on the left, then make the top block with the outer colors reversed: Start with the print, add the red, cut and press, then add the tan, cut and press. After that block is added to the original block, sewn around the outside, cut and pressed, you will come up with the second block. Hope this is understandable. |

i first saw her walking down the street and she barely acknowledged my greeting. Then I was in her store and tried to tell her how much I loved her videos and she was only politely responsive and moved on to talk to some obvious locals. I was taken by surprise because she seems so friendly on her videos. I still love MSQC! I just don't feel quite so warm and fuzzy watching Jenny. Lol. |
I think everyone on this board loves Jenny and her tutorials. I know I do.
Yadroc - that is beautiful - love it!! :-)

completely hooked... but I've not been as good at actually MAKING the quilts (sheepish grin). Your blocks look great!
Yes I love Missouri tutorials did the bag one and 3 dudes quilting.
I love Jenny as well and love the Block magazine. She can compete with the big dogs.
i love this site the tutes are fantastic
I love Jenny Doan. She taught me so much since I started quilting 18 months ago. She is great. I love all of her ideas.
Yes, I do like them. I love her easy, friendly manner. But you have to watch them with a grain of salt, too, largely because of the precuts. I was watching one on doing a star, and she used a layer cake. Because of the way she cut and sewed the piece, she ended up wasting more fabric than she used. Certainly, cutting the pieces from yardage would have worked much better, but that's not what she's selling. And the tumbler template, too. If you use the precuts, you waste about 1/2 the fabric in the block. If you would cut a 5" strip and cut and flip the template - no waste at all!
I got it now! you are only cutting thru the top layer like you did at the start duh! I love it...bigger blocks...thanks yadroc....
I did a nice size baby quilt by exploding the block 5 times with 5 different fabrics. Really made for a quick top. Got 3 done in about 2 hours! Then added two rows of borders to make it look finished and it turned out to be about 50" square. Also you can start the middle block with a pinwheel square which adds interest. I posted my pink exploded baby quilt a few weeks ago.

Yes, I am hooked on MSQC... Love the tutorials... If you want to make the dresden plate purse you will have to order the 10" dresden ruler from them.. My girlfriend and I looked all over Paducah and none to be had. Jenny Doan is so funny, and she explains things to where you can understand them... I also subscribed to her magazine The Block.
Both set of blocks are wonderful! Great job!
I love her new tutorial on Bordered Squares....gotta try it soon....
The exploding block is the best thing to happen to quilting since the rotary cutter. I'm making one now, surrounding the blocks with HSTs and it is looking better than anything I've made from a pattern. Jenny Doan is just amazing.

I love Jenny's tutorials, but I never see her square anything up. How on earth does she get her quilts to look so good without squaring. She uses so many precuts and we all know very often they are not true to size.
I just started the bordered quilt and found that I didn't like mixing the blues with the brown in the same block, so I'm doing all blue block and all brown block. I'm also doubling the size. We'll see, so far it looks good. I'll try to post pic when I finish.
I am doing the exploding block and find that cutting both ways diagonally the block come out really close to 6 1/4". I sewed 3 together to try and they lay very flat so maybe I won't have to worry about squaring up....we'll see
