I use Crayola Ultra clean markers. It washes out completely. For dark fabric I use light colored chalk sharpened to a point. Sometimes when the dark fabric turns to light in the block I mark with both the chalk and marker. I start marking in the middle out either diagonal or straight. I reverse and go the other way to make squares or diamonds. I do all my quilts in straight lines using a walking foot. I spray or glue baste and never have puckers. This book is the best I've found for straight line quilting designs. One Line at a Time by Charlotte Warr Andersen.

I love my metal right-angle square for keeping things true.

I questioned whether this was a good idea or just an impulse buy (I really like the Creative Grids Rulers) Anyway, it turns out, I have used it over and over. It is much straighter than my old wooden yard sticks. It was a pleasant surprise seeing how often it has turned out to be just the right tool.

FYI...the Item No. for the 36 x 2 1/2 inch ruler is
Ref: CGR236.
