The Splendid Sampler

Not sure if this is the right place to post this information. I just received an email announcing a new upcoming mystery quilt called "The Splendid Sampler" by Pat Sloan and Jane Davidson. There are at least 83 quilt designers who contributed to the process that will include various techniques for this 100-block quilt that will begin February 14th. The link is: http://www.thesplendidsampler.com/

Tartan 01-17-2016 09:24 AM

Great way to stretch your quilting techniques but I have too many UFO' s to start anything new.

Mariposa 01-17-2016 09:27 AM

This looks like fun! Thanks for sharing it! Happy stitching!!

ManiacQuilter2 01-17-2016 09:34 AM

Too many project right now for me two. Not sure if you should have posted in the Links & Resource section.

zennia 01-17-2016 10:07 AM

All these BOM'S look so interesting. I have signed up for this one but I really need to figure out which ones I really want to do. Can't do them all. I am already behind on the 365 day challenge.

Sounds like we have finally tired of Dear Jane and Farmers Wife. :D

SewExtremeSeams 01-17-2016 10:39 AM

It looks inviting. Thanks for posting the link.

Atomicdog 01-17-2016 12:27 PM

I'm excited!! Thank you for posting this - always love to see what folks are trying and I'm going to give it a shot. I mean, what's another UFO anyway??!!!

Watson 01-17-2016 12:55 PM

I have a question....If you have to buy your fabric over the course of the year because they don't give you a materials list, how much should you buy of your sort of "main" fabric to start off with to be sure you have enough to tie all the blocks together throughout the whole year? Or not something to worry about?

b.zang 01-17-2016 12:58 PM

Thanks for sharing! I've joined the Facebook group, confirmed my email address and now just get to wait. Not sure that I'll be able to keep up, but it will be fun to follow if only vicariously.

Kris P 01-18-2016 06:44 AM

I added the site to my bloglovin' feed. I'm hoping this will allow me to follow along without getting all those emails. I probably won't do it, but it will be fun to see it come together.

Geri B 01-18-2016 07:26 AM

I signed up out of curiosity....will see what those first few blocks really look like in February, when it is to be started. That will determine if I'm going to TRY to keep up or not......

tessagin 01-18-2016 08:23 AM

I have so many things going on right now. Won't be signing up. Actually have enough blocks for my own one day.

Snooze2978 01-18-2016 09:44 AM

Thanks just signed up for it.

JanieH 01-18-2016 12:18 PM

Thanks for the posting - sounds like fun. I just signed up.

AlvaStitcher 01-18-2016 05:01 PM

I have signed up as well. It will be added to my growing stacks of tops to be quilted at some later date.

jmoore 01-19-2016 04:33 AM

I would love to... but I vowed to finish a few UFO's and need to finish BH Allietare mystery. I'll probably follow along on her Facebook to see all the pretty blocks.

appleblossom 01-20-2016 12:09 PM

surely looks splendid! but let me think it over!

Belfrybat 01-20-2016 02:19 PM

I need to clone myself so I can all the good and nifty samplers, mysteries, sew-alongs, etc. done! This one does look interesting and surely will stretch those who participate. Thanks for sharing, even though it's not for me at present.

NannaL 01-20-2016 03:02 PM

You need 30 to 35 fat quarters, blocks are 6" and the largest piece used is 6 inches. It is a closed group so you have to join its free. Starting date is 14th February Valentines Day. That's the only info given out and the moment.

Just pick from your stash lights, mediums and darks and a neutral in either scrappy or your favourite colour combo.
Hope this helps.

ctyankee 01-20-2016 03:10 PM

This is exciting & I signed up. Hope I can keep up, though, since there are sooooo many BOMs out there now & I have my eye on one or 3. Why do they all have to start now? But thanks for the info!

Actually this helps a lot. I am always hesitant to start something like this, takes me a month of Sundays to pick material. Going to try, even if I work full time. I signed up. Though a closed group, will people still be following here as well?

Watson they said approximately 30-35 fat quarters and a yard or more of back ground fabric. Here is the link with the fabric they are using and the suggested yardage. http://www.thesplendidsampler.com/20...ric-and-tools/

I have never done anything like this before but have signed up and bought my fabric. I have never done PP, English PP, embroidery, and very little applique. I am nervous but excited to learn these new techniques.
I am sure I won't be able to keep up with 2 blocks a week with the new to me techniques, but I will be downloading them and plod along at my own pace.

Me too CRO, I work full time, plus the usual doctors, housework, all the stuff a person needs to do, I am apt to fall behind quickly, but want to do the best I can, at my pace also as I think this will be fun. I have put a finger into trying different techniques, but doing them together and learning from everyone will definitely help with the confidence level of actually doing it myself. Can't wait to get started.

CRO 02-12-2016 09:44 PM

AnngelAnne I also work full time and have a farm with a lot of chores to be done every day. I can fit in a couple hrs on my day off, and little to none in the summer.
Maybe we can encourage each other along this path. I don't plan on giving up. Just may be the one that posts their picture of the completed quilt in 2017. :)

Well, Cro, you won't be the only one posting that late, I don't get where the day off comes from, I was a farm girl too and it was difficult fitting in a lot of things, lol. You are something for sure. Yes, lets kept encouraging along this interesting path of learning. I don't plan on giving up either.

Geri B 02-28-2016 06:13 AM

I signed up for this too, but I'm a bit disappointed in the first three offerings...maybe not my style..so I have not done any, but am saving in case I decide to start. Do you like the blocks offered so far?

CRO 02-28-2016 07:44 AM

Geri B for me this is about learning new techniques. The small pieces have been hard, but I am getting better working with them. I've never done embroidery before, and am thankful it is just small amounts so it doesn't overwhelm me when I see the blocks with it.
I'm enjoying it so far. My favorite was block 1. I have done very little applique and it was a big enough piece I didn't struggle too much.:o

I know I sound selfish, but I like knowing someone is struggling along with me. Small pieces have definitely been an effort. Bu I find they are no different for me than big pieces except harder to handle and sew. No matter how much squaring off I do and how careful I cut, it just doesn't want to come out straight. Number 4 block so far is the toughest, such tiny circles and I don't applique well, but I will continue as I learn things, different ways of doing stuff too. Hopefully will finish up 4 tonight and then get 5 done.

NoraB 02-29-2016 09:26 AM

Ladydukes, thanks for posting this site. I signed up today, so I'm already a little behind...but I do plan on doing it. I think this will be a great use of my stash and will be fun for me. I saw block 5 "Simple Simon" and that technique was one I had written down, but didn't get it to make sense....now I have the pattern!

Thanks again for posting this and........if anyone has already done some of the blocks....can you post them here? I know its on facebook, but I am not on facebook........someone else also posted it might keep us all motivated!

Thanks! Let's get this one started and continue!

4 was also my toughest one for the same reasons, and it sure it isn't straight! LOL

CRO, this is truly beautiful! I'm thinking of signing up.

Well guess what, I am still stuggling with 4. Maybe tonight will be the magic. I keep trying to do them the way the pattern goes, but I may just end up giving up on this one and putting buttons for the smaller circles. But I will get it done, I will.

I don't care for hearts, but this is really pretty. I like the idea of posting here, have to get mine together and share.

Sewfine 03-01-2016 04:37 AM

Looks like fun.

CRO 03-01-2016 04:51 AM

I'm doing this and the stained glass one with all my super scrappy dregs. I'm going to do the Rosmaling in Baltimore too just haven't started yet.

I have trouble with small blocks. Some of these are kind of hard. Anyway, here are mine so far:

If the sizes are a bit off I'll just throw borders or sashing on.

Oh Dresi, I am impressed, nice work, and you are keeping up too. You are into several which is fun to do, in my book anyway, can't get bored that way. I am surprised with all you are doing you are not on Judy's mystery train. She is doing a table runner this time around. Just started, first week, material requirements. That is always a fun one to be on or at least follow and her patterns are wonderful fun, so far. These look good. Will post my three finished ones tonight.
