I was wondering if anyone is planning to do the Jelly Roll Mystery tomorrow, October 23, 2011 at Carterquilter. I would love to see pictures of your progress.

Hmm...looks interesting.

QuiltE 10-22-2011 10:52 AM

I wish I had known sooner ... I have tmro to myself, and could do it ... though I don't have the time to do the cutting tonight.
But then again? Maybe I could? hhmmmmm!!

Totally curious about this and would be fun to do an online Mystery.

PegD 10-22-2011 11:11 AM

Thanks for reminding me.

Sadiemae 10-22-2011 11:19 AM

Your welcome! I have been waiting patiently to see her mystery.

QuiltnNan 10-22-2011 11:20 AM

it would be fun, but i can't even seem to concentrate on the cutting instructions today. so i guess i won't do it with you

I am sorry I didn't ask sooner. The information was posted about it way back on September 12th, and I am sure other people missed it also.

Sounds like fun, but I won't be home from church until about noon and I would be 3 hours behind! Maybe next time it will be on a different day of the week...

It is 7:00 a.m. for me. I cannot wake to an alarm with the kind of sleep apnea I have, but I will save the patterns when I wake up.

I've been contemplating this since I posted ... even checked my stash to see if I had a piece large enough for the background fabric. I've decided that YES I could swing the time tonight to do the cutting. Though NO I should not do it ... I really should work on UFOs abd PhDs and not start something else.

Pleeeeeeeeeease do let me know another time, as I reeeeaaallly would like to be doing it. I'll be keeping an eye on the Mystery and will check in on everyone as you post your progress! HAVE FUN!!!!!

oatw13 10-22-2011 05:32 PM

I have all my pieces cut out! I don't know if I can finish it tomorrow, but I can sure get started! :)

I just saw this thread.
I'm going to try to get my fabric cut & will TRY to do this tomorrow.
I am very slow so will print off directions & work on it when I can.
Thanks for posting about this.

QuiltE 10-23-2011 05:07 AM

I don't know if I will finish much, because there are a lot of pieces.

My batteries are charging at the moment.

Ann912 10-23-2011 08:56 AM

Thanks for posting this. I will save the clues for a later time.

ljsunflower 10-23-2011 08:59 AM

Hey!
I've got strips! They are Christmas ones I got from a swap years ago. I don't have anything else to make from them so they will do for this.
I knew I had some but couldn't find them till this morning.
I just didn't want to cut MORE strips if I had some, ya know?
Anyway, I'm printing off the clues as they come & will start on it again in a few minutes.

I love Christmas fabric! This sounds wonderful!!!

"Jan" my darling sewing machine is at the shop keeping oiled and beautiful! I will print the mystery and plan to do it later.
I am in the middle of trying to free motion quilt a queen size for the first time. "Jan" was displeased with me so I took her to Ricky. Maybe have her oil and TLC she will play nice again. Then I will be able to see about the mystery.
My first queen quilt is a Cindy Carter pattern. She has the best designs. Love her work.

quilter in the making 10-23-2011 10:01 AM

Can't do it today as watching my grandson, so no sewing time. I am saving all the fabric requirements and clues so I can do this some day soon. Anyone taking part in this please post pictures to share sometime. Would love to see them.

QuiltE 10-23-2011 10:17 AM

I seem to recall reading here on the Board that some had done a New Year's Day Mystery this past year. Anyone know anything about this ... if there's one for this coming year, I'd be interested.

Or who/where/when are other ones?

vickig626 10-23-2011 10:38 AM

I have everything cut and ready to go for today then a special custom project came in for a customer. So, I've gotta get that done first. Gonna take this afternoon to finish.

I've printed the first 2 clues so far and it's killing me not to open up clues 3 & 4 posted so far.

I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Bummed me out to not be able to do this throughout the day but customers need to come first before "play".

Was it Planet Patchwork?

I have no clue ... just remember it being mentioned!

SewWrite 10-23-2011 05:49 PM

OK, I've never done a mystery quilt before, but I thought I'd give it a go. I didn't have a jelly roll, either, but I had some diff colors of the same small print, so I used strips of them. And I had some yardage of ecru with small white flowers, so I made that the background.

I washed, dried, starched & pressed all fabrics prior to cutting. I cut everything on Thurs & Friday - yeah, took me a couple of days. And apparently, I didn't cut right, either. Luckily, I had a few half-strips left over, so I was able to cut some more small squares to fill in where they needed to go, based on my random-color "pattern."

After I got going, even as novice a quilter as I am, I realized there are much better (EASIER) ways to piece this puppy. Too bad - I'd already cut everything. I'm sure it was done to make it easy to follow along & increase the "mystery" aspect of it.

And now that everything's all put together, I have confirmed my original feelings on scrappy (not my fave). But, I'd already planned it for a charity quilt, so I won't have any problems giving it away! BUT, and this is a biggie - I don't know how I'm gonna quilt it!

I can do straight-line & stitch in the ditch, but (spoiler alert!!!!) there are large patches of ecru with 2 seams running thru 'em!! Seems like a logical place to put some sort of stencil, but won't those seams get in the way??

Oh, and I don't mean to get all holy or preachy, but I did find sewing a gazillion short & straight seams rather tedious. Just my humble opinion!

Sadiemae 10-23-2011 06:01 PM

I have not even thought about how to quilt it. I don't have time to think about it yet... i don't really like SID, so I will do something else. Maybe something I want to practice.

As far as the piecing goes, I often change things to make them complement my piecing style. If I made it again, I would probably do more strip piecing. I have quite a bit more to do, but I really like it so far and really appreciate Cindy Carter giving the pattern to us!

SewWrite, can you post a finished picture for us to see?

SewWrite 10-23-2011 06:37 PM

SPOILER ALERT!! Scroll down if you'd rather not see pics of the mystery quilt!!!

The checkerboard is supposed to go all the way around, but you only see 2 sides here. And yes, it's all wonky, 'cuz the blocks are sewn, but not to each other yet.

SewWrite 10-23-2011 06:40 PM

Oh, and lookee there - I tried real hard to make the pattern RANDOM, but there are 2 reds together, big as day...THAT's why I try to view my projects from camera before I put them together!!! Sometimes the boo-boos just jump off the page that way!

Sadiemae 10-23-2011 07:01 PM

I love it! Your colors are great!

It's too bad you aren't happy with the way it all evolved.
It was a "Mystery" ... and you have to be prepared to take some risk in doing so.

I'm doing one right now thru my LQS ... will I like it when I am done? I have no clue!! I was willing to take the chance and see what came from it.

grannyrae 10-23-2011 11:43 PM

Sadiemae 10-24-2011 06:48 AM

SewWrite, it is just fine to not be really happy with the outcome. In order to do this mystery I had to use Moda strips that I got on clearance. I will never keep this quilt, because of all of the blue in it. I am fine with not liking the finished quilt because of the colors, but I wanted to make it.
