There have been many questions from board members about math related to quilting. I want to recommend a reference book that I have and use all the time to help in this area. Written by Peggy Scholley, The Quilter's Pocket Reference has over 30 pages of quilter's math and reference material. Starting with sizes of mattresses and quilt sizes, it shows how to measure for binding, how to do both straight and bias binding, how much fabric to purchase for triangles, squares, rectangles, and so on.
There are also electronic reference tools available, but my hard copy has been so helpful that I've purchased two of them for myself and several for friends, and they never need batteries. Here is one link to the book but there are many other places to purchase it. I bought all mine at my LQS.
