I've made many of these.... Used different textures and wideths of ribbon for the "tags". I've also heard of these being called "teething blankets".
For years, I made a matching one when I made baby blankets

*the button hole/hook idea is great*

I make them with minky on one side and satin on the other. Put loops of various ribbons spaced around them(loops were only 3/4-1 inch long). Babies love to feel the different textures.

I thought about tiny fingers being caught in thr loops too. I suppose you could make flat tabs, not looped.

Got this baby cube with tags on as a project this morning.

I know it has embroidery on it but you could applique or just patchwork each side?

Please post a pic. My 7 month old son loves tags! With him though the tags have to have words on it like clothing tags he likes to look at the letters. I was thinking of making him one....

Make the loops small, I cut 3" ribbons then fold in half. I leave about 1/2 " outside the seam allowance and the 1" ends inside . I reinforce the stitching so the ribbon won't unravel. once they are pressed flat it would be hard for fingers to get thru loops.
