No shortage in my home !! I always collect lots of lights especailly when I could find end of bolts specials. I probably should start cleaning out the two drawers where I store them.

Is it possible to do a scrappy quilt with a light center surrounded by medium and darker squares. I've seen some great ideas under the post of scrappy quilt show .... Scrappy Quilt show - Right Here!! . Good luck! I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

Try using the backs of some of the mediums and darks, or try discharge dyeing (removing color with bleach or dye remover) some of them.

Light, medium and dark are all relative terms unless you're talking about black or white. Some of your lightest mediums and darkest darks will have very noticeable contrast.

Maybe a D9P with a light in the center--after cutting, it would be sprinkled all over the quilt.

Do two types of blocks like a sixteen patch square block and a striped block. Try to organize the putting together of each block in color order. . . brown, red, blue, green, etc., Sometimes putting in consistent order makes the eye see all the colors more intensely and not dark, doom & gloom.

I have this problem too. When I buy new fabric for a project, I make myself include some light or neutral fabric also in my purchase so that I can build that up in my stash. For scraps it is all a reflection of what you have been using in your quilts. Swapping is always a good answer too.

I just borrowed Kaffe Fassett's "Patchwork : Over 25 Glorious Quilt Designs" with Liza Prior Lucy from the library. As Charlotte mentions he has quite a way with colour/design. Many of his really stunning quilts have a less than traditional approach...not all a light/dark contrast. After reading through this book, I am starting to look at fabric in a different way. I know not everyone likes his style, and I was pretty lukewarm to begin with but he has some interesting ideas and it's well worth a look.
