Default Adding a flange to a quilt

I am thinking about putting a flange on a UFO that I am finally finishing up. How wide do I cut the strip? Is there a common size that is used or does this vary depending on the overall size of the quilt? Thanks for your input. I love this board. Always learning something new and useful.

If the flange is for the binding, look for Charisma's Quick Machine Binding with Flange tutorial on QB. If the flange is in the body of the quilt, you can make it whatever size you want.

The problem with making a flange very wide is that it tends to flop over rather than stay straight, especially when the quilt is washed.

I usually cut 1 1/4" strips then fold in half!

I agree with Dunster ... I left one a little wider and it just does not finish off as nicely as keeping it narrower.

I cut at one inch, press in half, then stitch in place .... so only 1/4" is left showing.
I have done it narrower.

CoventryUK, LOVE your quilt, on my list of those to do, I agree about the size you use. Makes a nice accent without being too 'floppy'.

I make mine like my teacher taught me. The accent is 2" & the regular binding is 1 1/2". It makes a small flange - about 1/4" - just perfect & won't flop.

I did a white flange too wide and folded it over to make "curves". that helped a bit but I still didn't like it. live and learn.
Oh, I just found this on how to do it http://thecraftyquilter.com/2012/03/...to-your-quilt/

I like to use them as a quilt stop and cut the strips at 1" w so there is just a narrow line of color between the body of the quilt and any borders I add. I also like to use narrow piping for this purpose too.

You can make a flange as wide as you want but the wider it is, the less neat it gets.
peace
