Default Adding to older lap quilt

My DH wants his lap quilt, which I made years ago, made bigger. I made the first one with Civil War reproduction fabrics. I found three historical fabrics in similar colors. Now to decide how to enlarge the quilt. I was thinking about making a "picture frame" border but not too sure how to miter the corners. Also, need the top and bottom borders to be wider than the sides so it turns out longer than it currently is.
All suggestions are welcome! Thanks.

Because the one new fabric is a directional print, I would cut a wide strip of that and add it to the top and bottom to make up the length. Then add the gold & navy borders. Here's a tutorial on how to miter:

Personally, however, unless you really want to sew multiple border strips together before adding them to the quilt or there's a border print you want to showcase, you won't really see the miters and for me it's a hassle. I would add the gold & blue borders individually in the usual manner.

I agree with this!! Those fabrics are going to look wonderful with the quilt

How are you planning to add on? What will you do if edges are bound? I have a bound quilt that needs width added.

You could add a row of blocks all around to make it larger, then add a border or not, depending on how much bigger you want it.

Just in case this helps, I posted my results when I added a border to a finished quilt. Here is the link....I think. I am very satisfied with my results, though the quilt police might not agree.

Thanks. I will wait until I feel like removing the binding. I just wondered if some cut the binding off.
