What if you chose the african fabrics with the same color scheme and made the baby's quilt from the new fabrics, then either a small wallhanging for her room with the new fabrics & the scarves combined, or perhaps make a little "doll" quilt with the scarves...

I like your idea of going with the same color scheme. Lots of folks don't really know what type of fabrics should be used, or are appropriate, for a quilt, so I'd be willing to bet the colors are what attracted them anyway. Love to see it when it's done - or even in progress!

i'm inclined to agree, that it was probably the colors that attracted them, and if quilt was similar they would be happy.
A layered skirt on a doll to hang on wall would tie in with quilt, and everyone will be happy! a great surprise! :D

I make these for my grand children. You may try using the fabric like this. It is a wall quilt with name, weight, length, birth date, time and birth place.

I think getting similar fabric colors in cotton and using that for the quilt then, use the scarves for a window valance, curtain, ya know.... to keep the heritage going.

i made a large quilt using voile in the main blocks. i prewashed and foundation pieced and even though the voile got limp, it worked out fine. i think that if you preshrink, use fusible and plenty of stitching it should work. it's the small flower print and i don't know if it shows, but it has stitching back and forth on every piece.
