I can't do close-up work in the car either, so good for you! I wouldn't cut the background fabric. It will keep the piece from going wonky (love that word).

Next time, you may want to thread a few needles ahead of time, so you don't have to fight the bumps in the road.

I don't trim any material from the back of my applique work . Your stitches look fine considering you worked in the car Good Luck
