I got a great hint at the Ben Franklin Block of the Month club last month. If your machine has different needle positions, you can move it over one increment (not sure how much that is, but probably a millemeter) to the right and create a scant 1/4 inch. I can't tell you how much this has helped me! I have been fighting to become a better quilter (more accurate) for years! So thanks to Janet at Ben Franklin in Monroe, WA for this great hint!!!

Take 3 strips of fabric 1.5" wide and about 5" long, sew them together side
by side, press and measure the middle piece. It should be 1". If not, adjust
your needle a notch and do another test until you get 1". I do a test every
time I start a new project.

I find that on most of my machines, I can go "one click" right and still use the straight stitch plate and feet. That's with machines that have 9+ needle positions and 5.5-9mm feed dogs. Of course, if you can get by w/o the ss plate and foot, you can click away!

My machine has a 1/4 in setting but it is not right. I have to adjust my needle to 2.5 setting to get accurate sized blocks.
I have bought 1/4 inch feet but still did not get the right size.
Each machine is different so you have to experiment to get it set for you.
A way to set for 1/4 inch is to put a piece of masking tape in front of your needle. Then take a ruler and lower the needle on the 1/4 in line lower the foot then mark the tape with a pencil. This line will give you a guide for your fabric to follow. Then do the strip piecing test that was recommended.
