I would try sewing a stay stitch almost on the seam line of the upper and then clip the seam allowance at about 1/4 to 1/2 inch intervals up to the stitching.

I think it would be easier to line up the uppers and the soles if you do that.

FYI the UK 4 equivalent is US size 6

Where is the problem you are having? I know putting the sole to the top takes a lot of pinning and easing in usually on slippers.
